About 10,000 young Kenyans have completed nine months of intensive training and graduated as police constables, marking one of the largest intakes in the history of the National Police Service.
The final group of the 2025/26 cohort passed out at the National Police College, Embakasi Campus, in mid-September. President William Ruto had directed the recruitment, with 4,000 of the positions reserved for National Youth Service graduates.
Many of the new officers previously relied on casual jobs. Their entry into the service offers better pay, job security and a chance to support their families. Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen has already called for another recruitment drive, saying the additional officers will strengthen security and create more opportunities for young people, especially Gen Z.

The Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) has warned that new Central Bank of Kenya rules targeting the country’s largest banks could push up the cost of loans and slow lending.
The proposed regulations would require Domestic Systemically Important Banks (the biggest lenders) to hold extra capital buffers. KBA CEO Raymond Molenje said forcing tier-one banks to raise more capital and liquidity at the same time as they work towards the Sh10 billion minimum core capital requirement could force them to reduce lending.
“When you ask the tier-one banks to increase their capital and liquidity ratio, they will put some brake on lending to customers,” Molenje said. He described the proposal as good but poorly timed, urging the CBK to first complete the sector-wide capital upgrade.
The CBK maintains that the banking sector remains stable and that the rules are needed to strengthen systemically important lenders.

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has threatened to direct its members to withdraw from administering and marking the 2026 national examinations unless the government reviews examination allowances.
Secretary-General Akello Misori said the current rates paid to invigilators, supervisors, centre managers and examiners are too low. The union has petitioned the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to review the payments.
Misori warned that if the issue is not addressed, teachers will be asked not to take part in examination duties starting from the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) through to the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). The warning comes as the 2026 national assessment cycle is set to begin in October.
KUPPET has also raised concerns over the Basic Education Bill 2026 and other proposed education reform laws, arguing that the process is being rushed without proper policy foundation.

The National Treasury has put salaried Kenyans on notice over planned changes to Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax bands.
Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has confirmed that public participation on the proposed reforms will begin in the first week of October 2026. Under the main proposal, the first KSh 30,000 of monthly earnings would be tax-free, while income between KSh 30,001 and KSh 50,000 would be taxed at 25 per cent instead of the current 30 per cent.
The changes could benefit more than 3.4 million workers but are projected to cost the government about KSh 35 billion in annual revenue. The proposals were left out of the Finance Act 2026 and have faced repeated delays. Once public participation ends, a Tax Laws Amendment Bill will be prepared for Parliament.

Kenya’s cement consumption has crossed the one-million-tonne monthly mark for the first time, signalling a strong rebound in the construction sector.
Data shows production and uptake have surged, driven by the revival of stalled infrastructure projects, increased government spending on housing, and improved access to credit. Full-year 2025 consumption reached about 10.28 million tonnes, the highest on record, while early 2026 figures continue the upward trend.
The recovery follows a difficult 2024 when high interest rates and unpaid contractor bills slowed activity. Manufacturers are now benefiting from sustained demand linked to affordable housing programmes and major road works.

Police in Murang’a have seized dozens of cartons of alcoholic drinks suspected to be counterfeit following reports that two people fell ill after drinking from a local bar in Maragua.
The operation, led by county Administration Police commander Pauline Njeri, was conducted on 23 September after intelligence linked the outlet to the distribution of the suspected fake drinks. One of the victims was admitted to hospital while the other was later discharged.
Officers recovered 28 cartons of vodka, 40 bottles of 50ml vodka, brandies and other assorted alcoholic products, as well as cigarettes. The bar owner was arrested.
The seized products have been taken for verification by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) to determine if the tax stamps and standards marks are genuine.

Authorities destroyed more than one tonne of methamphetamine valued at Sh8.2 billion at Bamburi Cement Factory in Mombasa.
The consignment, weighing about 1,036kg and packed in 769 packages, was seized in October 2025 during a multi-agency maritime operation in the Indian Ocean. A Kenya Navy ship intercepted a stateless dhow about 630 kilometres off the Mombasa coast.
Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, Inspector General Douglas Kanja, senior police and Navy officers, and the Director of Public Prosecutions witnessed the court-supervised destruction. Six Iranian nationals are facing trial over the haul at Shanzu Law Courts.
Officials described the exercise as a major blow to international drug trafficking networks using Kenya’s waters as a transit route.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s camp has lost the “Ukombozi” name after Kalonzo Musyoka’s Azimio coalition successfully reserved and adopted it.
On 21 September, Kalonzo announced that Azimio had rebranded as The Ukombozi Alliance. The name was reserved with the Registrar of Political Parties on 20 July 2026.
Sifuna’s allies had planned to rename the United Democratic Party as Ukombozi People’s Party, but the Registrar rejected the application on 8 September, citing similarity with the already reserved name.
Sifuna’s team is now looking at other existing parties as it races to secure a political vehicle ahead of an expected October launch.

DCI has arrested Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot, suspected of being the gunman who killed prominent lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu on 9 September 2025.
Mbobu was shot while driving home along Magadi Road in Nairobi. Detectives recovered the Ceska pistol that had been officially issued to Cheruiyot at the time of the incident. Ballistic tests confirmed the firearm was used in the fatal shooting.
A second suspect, boda boda rider Nicholas Lemiso Naula, was also arrested. He is accused of ferrying the constable to and from the scene. A third suspect, another boda rider named Noah Kipkirui Langat, has since been arrested on suspicion of conducting surveillance on the lawyer before the attack.
Investigators have further linked the Mbobu killing to the July 2026 murder of clinical psychologist Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso in Upper Hill. Inspector Kenneth Sang, who remains at large, is alleged to have coordinated both operations together with Rose Mbithe, who is already in custody over Dr Mutiso's killing.

At least 4.1 million people in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) faced high levels of acute food insecurity between April and June 2026, according to a new IGAD report released on Thursday.
The figure represents a 46% increase, nearly 1.3 million more people, compared with the 2025 peak. More than 700,000 of those affected were in Emergency (IPC Phase 4), including about 429,500 refugees.
The rise has been linked mainly to worsening drought after the poor October–December 2025 rains, which caused crop failures, poor yields, and severe shortages of pasture and water. Counties hardest hit include Turkana, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Tana River.
Across the wider IGAD region (Djibouti, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda), 40.3 million people are currently facing high levels of acute food insecurity. The situation is expected to remain challenging as El Niño rains approach, with further pressure on food prices and livelihoods.

Haitian TikToker Esther Thomas, popularly known as “Nice B”, is wanted by police in connection with the killing of a woman known as “Baby Love” in Croix-des-Bouquets.
The DCPJ is seeking Thomas over allegations including murder, attempted murder and association with criminals. She has reportedly been linked to the incident involving members of the 400 Mawozo gang.
The case gained widespread attention after disturbing videos linked to the killing circulated online. Police continue to search for Thomas, while the allegations against her have not been proven in court.

Ruto Meets Kenyan WNBA Star Madina Okot in New York:
President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto met Kenyan basketball player Madina Okot on Wednesday night in Brooklyn, New York, during a WNBA game between the Atlanta Dream and New York Liberty.
The First Couple sat courtside at Barclays Center to support Okot, who is in her rookie season with the Atlanta Dream. The Dream won the match 83-65, securing a playoff spot.
Okot, the first Kenyan woman drafted into the WNBA (selected 13th overall by Atlanta in 2026), came off the bench and recorded two points and two rebounds in limited minutes. After the game, she met the President and First Lady on the court, where they took a selfie and spoke in Swahili.
Ruto is in New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
Okot described the visit as a great honour, saying it shows the President’s support for sports and could open more opportunities for Kenyan girls.

Man Arrested in Githurai Reportedly Found Dead Hours Later:
A man identified as Anthony Ochieng has reportedly been arrested by officers said to be from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and Kasarani Police Station in the Githurai area.
Photos and videos circulating online appear to show Ochieng being handcuffed and led away during the reported arrest. Hours later, reports emerged that he had been found dead.
The death has reportedly been attributed to a road accident, raising questions over what happened between his arrest and the reported death.
As of this evening, there is no public statement confirming the circumstances of the arrest, the alleged accident or the exact timeline of events. No postmortem findings have also been released.
The matter remains unclear, with calls for authorities to provide a full account of what happened.

37 Miners Die in Custody at NSCDC Detention Facility in Nigeria
Thirty-seven suspected illegal miners have died while in the custody of Nigeria’s Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger State.
The victims were among 67 people arrested during anti-illegal mining operations on September 15 and 16. They were found dead in a detention cell the following morning, with overcrowding, poor ventilation and possible exposure to harmful substances among the issues being investigated.
The state NSCDC commandant and 23 other officers were suspended and taken into custody as police launched investigations. A new commandant has since been appointed.
Protests erupted in Minna following the deaths, leading to a temporary curfew. Autopsies and forensic examinations are ongoing, with no final cause of death yet established.
