Coming back to the point about ta'wil, ta'wil is a barrier to takfir in issues where the manat is takdhib al shari', because ta'wil by necessity is built on tasdeeq, and hence indicates that takdheeb has not taken place. Same is true of jahl. If someone is ignorant of what the Shari' has said, his rejection of it is not based on takdheeb of the Shari'. Salafi udhr-bil-jahl debates on shirk go around in circles forever because neither side actually has any clue what role ta'wil and jahl have in averting the hukm of takfir, and so naturally, you see what you see with most Salafi debates: The last man quoting Ibn Taymiyyah wins.

August 19, 2020 When I finished memorising the Mu’allaqah of Imru’ al-Qays and read it to the shaykh. It’s one of the Hanging Poems which we use for lexical evidence in Arabic sciences and by extension in Tafsīr and Hadīth etc.

Jahili poetry holds great significance in Classical Arabic literature, to the point that it is an essential reference point for scholars to interpret the Qurʾan. The great Imam al-Shafiʿi was known to have memorised entire corpus that the Hudhal tribe had to offer. And the story doesn’t end there. Even in the modern world, a British Bangladeshi student of knowledge from East London who memorised the entire muʿallaqah of Imruʾ al-Qays during the Covid lockdown. There are scholars who believe that the correct response to Israeli aggression is to pray, become more pious, suffer in silence, and appeal to the humanity of people. After all, Allah does not change the condition of the people until they change themselves (13:11), and Israel is a nuclear power with a modern army and the international community on its side. Any other response will be reckless and invite more suffering. Instead, if we become more righteous, Allah may open a path for liberation in the future — they say. What these scholars should understand is that Zionism is at the precipice of entering its second stage: normalization. Normalization doesn’t just mean that Israelis invest in Arab economies. Many Arab rulers just see this as an opportunity to make more money. Normalization is about making Israel a more permanent fixture in the Middle East and not just a settler colony. It is a pivot away from the West, which has been waning its influence in the region. They want to put their eggs in more baskets, because having one small land for all Israelis, supported only by faraway countries, surrounded by enemies, is not as safe as they’d like to be. So, part of normalization is the establishment of Israeli communities and population centres in cities like Dubai and Riyadh. Israelis have already been making trips to places including Tabuk and even Medina (just outside of the mosque complex). Jews have a long history in these places that they would like to re establish. Since conscription is mandatory in Israel, that means these new expat communities will be full of IDF and probably Mossad. For the past few decades, Israel has lacked the human resources on the ground in the Muslim world that they used to have in their diaspora. Now, they can re-establish that presence. With settlements across the region, and an economy tied to Arab economies, any future isolation of Israel will become impossible. Furthermore, Israel started with migration to Palestine. What is to stop them from claiming sovereignty over more lands? They already have lands in Syria and Lebanon, they used to have the Sinai, and Israeli settlements are eating up the West Bank. Furthermore, Israelis have their grievances with Muslims. They’re not going to forget those grievances if they’re living in the Arab world. They will likely be a cultural fifth column, and any cultural power they acquire will be used toward de-Islamization and the deracination of our values. The same is done in Christian societies. Palestinians also have certain huquq over us that the Umma has a collective responsibility to fulfill. That applies to all our oppressed people and not just Palestinians. Even if you believe that Israel is here to stay, delaying and preventing normalization is a very realistic and rational goal. The populations just have to keep asserting that Israel is a red line. Israel has an emigration problem, a constitutional democracy problem, a Palestinian problem, a Haredi problem, and three active war fronts (Gaza, Lebanon, Yemen). If you still believe Israel is invincible, they’ll still have to eventually come to terms that their state needs a solution for Palestinians. Whether that’s 2 states, equal rights, or something else, solving Palestine is actually in their best interest, and many American Jews know this. Normalization is a way to sidestep the Palestinian problem. Isolation forces them to address it. Keep praying and keep becoming pious. But also, keep enjoining in established virtues and condemning evil.
