Scholars were determined to follow the truth, even if it meant holding views that did not line up with their madhhab. Ibn al-Jawzi was a Hanbali, yet that did not prevent him from impartiality. He investigated Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal's Musnad, and came to the conclusion that it had baseless and fabricated traditions, which he included in his book al-Mawdu'at. He did not say, "This is the Musnad of our Imam, how can it have fabricated traditions?" It was Ibn Hajar, a Shafi'i, who responded to this criticism of Ibn al-Jawzi, and defended al-Musnad by penning the work al-Qawl al-Musaddad, arguing that none of these hadiths reach the level of fabricated. He did this not because of partisanship or that it suited his interests, but because he felt that Ibn al-Jawzi had erred. - summarized from Shaykh Sa'id al-Ghamidi

The number of academic works and articles being withdrawn due to the suspicion of improper AI use is alarming. There have been already a few cases of published articles being found to cite the names of works and books that don't actually exist, which means AI was likely relied upon in a sloppy fashion. In a hasty copy/paste job, the authors of these exposed works did not realize that the AI they were using was hallucinating and gave them a list of sources that don't actually exist. The sad thing is that any piece published in the post-AI era will likely be exposed to more scrutiny, even when the authors exercise the same effort, creativity, professionalism, and academic integrity as in the pre-AI days. If your writing is perceived to be too mechanical and tidy, you will be an object of suspicion. In many cases, a work published in 2026 may not be given the same respect and attention as a work published 5 years earlier. The reader of current publications will immediately have a mental asterisk light up for any line that feels "too good", suspecting that AI might have been used to write the segment. They will mentally ask themselves: "Did (s)he really write that line?" "Is this person a good writer or they just know what prompts to use?" It's a real shame, but this is the reality that modern writers will have to grapple with. If you reach your academic "prime" these days, people might appreciate your work, but there will likely be more whispers and murmurs that you only reached your success thanks to ChatGPT, even though you didn't. We have to honestly ask: Has the notion of authenticity become empty in a post-AI world where the lines between human writing and an LLM have become indistinguishable?

"The jurists say that the ruling of speech when relieving oneself is that it is detested (makruh), but this is only the baseline ruling. In fact, when relieving oneself, speech can assume one of the five legal rulings, depending on the circumstances: 1) It can be haram: This is if the Qur'an is being read. 2) It can be detested: This is the default for normal speech when there is no legitimate need (hajah). 3) It can be permissible: This is when one speaks due to a legitimate need (hajah). 4) It can be recommended: if someone sees a person heading towards a danger they are unaware of - like a blind person heading toward an open well - they can alert them even if other people in the area (who can alert him) are present. 5) It can be obligatory: if someone sees a person heading towards a danger they are unaware of - like a blind person heading toward an open well - and no one else is present, they must alert them, because this is a darurah (necessity). The difference between 4 and 5 is that the ruling ascends to the level of an obligation if no one besides him is present to give an alert." - Sh. Talal al-Dawsary

"Istihālah and Istihlāk are often mixed up with one another, so a person should know the difference between the two terms. Istihālah is when one substance changes into another substance; after its transformation, it is not given the ruling of the substance it came from, but rather the ruling of what it has become. Istihlāk is when a small amount of something is added to a large amount of a substance and is consumed in it, meaning it disappears and dissolves within it." - Summarized from Sh. Musa'id al-Jabir

Al-Ahsa' has been an oasis of inter-madhhab tolerence for centuries. It is a place where scholars of the four madhhabs have lived together, relied on one another, cited each other, and even written group fatwas together to deal with new problems that arose in their region. Al-Ahsa' puts to serious question uni-dimensional narratives, like the claim that 1) madhhabs compete against one another and only thrive through infighting, striving for patronage, and intolerance, and that 2) a land cannot be legally stable unless if it is ruled through a single madhhab.

Fāidah Lughawiyyah (Linguistic Benefit) Ḥalqah (حَلْقَة) = circle/group of people, e.g. ḥalqah of 'ilm. Ḥalaqah (حَلَقَة) = plural of حَالِق (barber). Common mistake: saying ḥalaqah instead of ḥalqah to refer to circle of knowledge. Benefit from: Shaykh Anas ibn 'Abd al-Raḥmān ibn 'Abdillāh ibn 'Aqīl, from our dars on Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim with him today.

“[T]o say that a school[madhabb of fiqh] survived because it was favoured by the prince is to put the cart before the horse. Princes were practical politicians. They gave their support where it did the most good for themselves; they gave support where they found strength already in existence.” -George Makdisi

🔥 My Labour of Love for the Last 10 Years: ‘An Introduction to the Ḥanafī Madhhab Volume 1’ Alḥamdulillah, after just over 10 years, my book ‘An Introduction to the Ḥanafī Madhhab Volume 1’ is now essentially complete. I’ve known this book longer than I’ve known my wife or my daughter and it’s been with me in the good times and the bad. I thank Allah the Almighty for allowing me to dedicate this portion of my life to a man whose knowledge and personality continuously inspire me on this journey of ʿIlm; Abū Ḥanīfah Al-Nuʿmān bin Thābit raḥimahullah (d.150 AH). Attached is the contents page of the book. The book is just over 600 pages but I am intending to reduce the size if I can insha’Allah. Insha’Allah it will be sent for publishing next year. Before that, however, I will be covering the entire book in an ONLINE COURSE for a full-year insha’Allah. All participants will be given a non-downloadable pdf of the book. This course will be announced later this year insha’Allah. If you’re already interested in this, then message me privately and I will add you on to this course even though it has not yet launched. Full details of the course will be released later. Ideal for Ḥanafī Fiqh students and especially Iftaa students. (Mufti) Muadh Chati +447745083017 www.islamicknowledge.co.uk
