A fluffernutter is an American sandwich made with peanut butter and marshmallow fluff. And yes, it's a REAL English word!

🤔 English has plenty of other bizarre-looking words that sound completely invented but are actually genuine English words!
And that brings us neatly to today's challenge!

| 19 | ⛳️ Who Invented Golf?
Ask who invented the telephone, and there is a name most people can give you. Ask who invented golf, and the answer is much less straightforward.
Games involving a stick and a ball had been played in Europe for centuries before modern golf appeared. Several countries have therefore claimed a connection with its origins. However, the game we recognise as golf today developed mainly in Scotland during the Middle Ages. There is no evidence that one particular person suddenly invented it. Instead, it seems to have evolved gradually from earlier games.
We know that golf was already popular in Scotland by 1457 for an unusual reason: the government tried to stop people playing it. King James II banned both golf and football because they were distracting men from practising archery. At the time, archery was considered important for Scotland's military defence. The ban was not particularly successful, and golf continued to grow in popularity.
Scotland's landscape also helped shape the sport. Coastal areas known as "links" provided open, naturally uneven ground that was well suited to the game. St Andrews became particularly important. A document from 1552 confirms the right of local people to play golf on its famous links, although this does not mean that golf was first played there in that year.
As the game became more organised, players needed agreed rules. In 1744, the Gentlemen Golfers of Leith produced the earliest known written rules of golf. There were just 13. During the following century, improved transport, cheaper equipment and increasing leisure time helped golf become accessible to more people and spread far beyond Scotland.
So who invented golf? Probably nobody. Scotland can reasonably claim to be the birthplace of the modern game, but golf itself was the result of centuries of development rather than one person's bright idea. | 74 |
