🐄 Happy Friday! It's time once again for a view from the udder side. Welcome to The Bovine View.🐮 👻 Have you ever ordered food from a restaurant that doesn't actually exist? The truth is, you may never know. Chinese authorities are cracking down on so-called 👻 ghost kitchens👨‍🍳 — restaurants that appear on food delivery apps but may have no genuine physical presence of their own. The BBC reports that in some cases, investigators found businesses operating under false addresses, using forged licences, or passing orders to third-party kitchens hidden from the customer. 📖 To read more about the story, click here:👈 For English learners, the story highlights an interesting modern expression. A ghost kitchen has nothing to do with the supernatural. In this context, the word ghost describes something that exists, but remains hidden from public view. English now uses ghost👻 far beyond the supernatural. Today, it can be attached to almost anything that appears to exist, but is absent, hidden, unofficial, or not quite what it seems. In fact, if somebody told you they rented a ghost👻 car🚗 today, you would probably have a rough idea what they meant — even though the expression doesn't officially exist. As in the first part of the Duolingo English Test (DET), your task today is to decide whether something is genuine English or not. 👇 Which of the phrases in the quiz below are genuine (click yes) or false (click no). #TheBovineView#LearnEnglish#EnglishVocab#Ghostkitchens BTW - what is a ghost car👻🚘? Put a comment if you know.

📰 Incredible engineering dream unveiled — a mile‑long floating city costing an estimated £12 billion with room for 80,000 people! That’s right — a proposed vessel called the Freedom Ship would be like a city at sea, bigger than any cruise ship ever built, complete with schools, shops, parks, restaurants, nightclubs, museums, a sports stadium and much more. It’s designed to stay at sea continuously, powered by nuclear energy, and may be too large to ever dock in a traditional port. 👉 Read more about the idea in the link here.👈 Even if you’ve never set foot on a ship, English is packed with expressions that come from life at sea. One classic example is the 1974 disco hit “Rock the Boat” by the Hues Corporation. 🎬 Watch the video carefully here on YouTube and see how many maritime words, phrases, expressions and nautical references you can spot! 👇 Check your answers behind the spoiler: ⚓️ To rock the boat – To cause problems or disturb a situation that is working well. ⚓️ Don't tip the boat over – Don’t do anything that could ruin a good situation. ⚓️ Our voyage of love – A journey, especially through life or a relationship. ⚓️ Safe from a rolling sea – Protected from difficulties or uncertainty. ⚓️ To harbour – To provide safety, protection, or shelter; figuratively, to shelter or protect someone emotionally. ⚓️ A ship on the ocean – Metaphor for a journey through life or a relationship. ⚓️ Sailing with a cargo – Carrying love, devotion, or other valuable “goods.” ⚓️ We sailed through every storm – Successfully overcoming problems or challenges. ⚓️ The strength that flows from you – Figurative water imagery representing support, energy, or inspiration. ⚓️ Don't let me drift – Don’t let someone lose direction, focus, or connection. 🌊 Maritime Idioms Quiz! Now that you’ve explored the language in Rock the Boat, it’s time to test your knowledge with our nautical idioms quiz. Can you match the five literal pictures to the correct idioms? Take your best guess and see how well you know these English maritime expressions. 🚢 Answers will be revealed as you go thought the quiz, so give it a try for instant results! #MaritimeEnglish #RockTheBoat #EnglishIdioms #NauticalExpressions
