It is also given to reduce the side effects of Methotrexate and to enhance the anticancer effect of Fluorouracil. In addition, folic acid may improve fertility in both men and women. It also lowers homocysteine levels, which may reduce the risk of stroke, especially in elderly patients and those with cardiovascular disease.

High risk → 4–5 mg/day.
Low risk → 400 mcg/day.
Start before pregnancy → Continue until week 12.

Megaloblastic Anemia can occur due to prolonged Phenytoin/Phenobarbitone therapy; this is
treated by Folic acid, but large doses should be avoided, because large doses may diminish their
anticonvulsant effect

Pregnancy/Lactation: 0.8 mg/day.
Oral folic acid: Safe حتى 15 mg.
Always rule out Vitamin B12 deficiency before giving folic acid لأن Folic acid treats anemia, not the neurological manifestations of B12 deficiency.
