Ferrari Unveils Fully Electric Car Ferraris are known for their loud, powerful, high-revving engines. But the newest car from this luxury maker could be a little quieter. Ferrari has unveiled its first fully electric car — and prices start at $640,000. The car is called the Luce ("LOO-chay"), which is Italian for "light." It's got five seats — a first for a Ferrari — and has an electric motor on each wheel. The Luce, which has been in development for about five years, can hit 100 kilometers per hour in as little as 2.5 seconds. Most family cars take six to 10 seconds to do the same, though it's not unusual for electric vehicles to do it faster — with the Tesla Model S actually getting to 100 kilometers per hour in 2.1 seconds. The Luce's top speed is 310 kilometers per hour, and it can travel over 500 kilometers when fully charged. The company says the Luce is its "most comfortable Ferrari ever." And while it won't have the sounds of a gasoline engine, Ferrari said the car will amplify the sounds of the electric motors' vibrations, making it sound and feel more like other Ferraris. However, people online aren't happy with how different the car looks from other Ferraris. The company said it could take some time for people to appreciate it. Ferrari has released its electric car at a time when other car companies — including luxury makers — are reducing their electric vehicle plans because interest has been lower than expected. Lamborghini has decided to focus more on hybrid cars, while Porsche has reduced its plans for electric cars because of poor sales and competition from Chinese carmakers.
