| 13 | British Fintech Firm Shares Client Data With Fraudsters
Revolut, a British fintech company, confirmed that it disclosed confidential customer data after deceitful requests from a legitimate government agency domain.
According to TechCrunch, attackers accessed personal data including names, dates of birth, postal and email addresses, phone numbers, and copies of documents such as passports and driver's licenses.
In some cases, verification selfies, account statements, and transaction histories may also have been compromised.
Revolut stated that only a limited number of clients were affected and that the company has contacted them directly. The exact number of victims and the government department involved have not been disclosed.
“Revolut recently uncovered a complex external impersonation scheme, in which an unauthorized third party used an email from a legitimate government domain to send fraudulent information requests,” a company representative said.
After discovering the incident, Revolut blocked the email address and notified the government agency, law enforcement, and regulators.
The company emphasized that its systems, services, and customer funds were not affected.
Cryptosecurity researcher ZachXBT noted the leak likely impacted high-net-worth clients.
Revolut serves more than 80 million users worldwide and operates as a bank in over 30 countries.

🇬🇧 Dozens of children aged 12 or under reported to forced marriage unit since 2021
Schools will be missing children after the summer holidays, experts have warned, as new figures reveal the scale of underage forced marriage in the UK.
At least 100 children aged 12 or younger have been referred to the government’s forced marriage unit in the past five years, an FOI request uncovered.
There have been 27 children aged up to five who were referred to the service, while 62 were aged 10 or below.
While not every referral indicates a forced marriage has taken or will take place, the figures have been branded ‘deeply disturbing’ given the young age of many of the children being monitored.
Forced marriage is a criminal offence in the UK, with the legal age raised from 16 to 18 in England and Wales in 2023.

Internationally there has been increasing calls for a moratorium on surrogacy, with the Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, Reem Alsalam, concluding in her report on surrogacy (A/80/158) that it is: "
a system of exploitation and commodification of women and children, which... subjects them to economic, psychological, physical, and reproductive violence, including in connection to slavery and human trafficking."
In addition to the exploitation, including trafficking, of the women and girls providing these reproductive services, the children produced are at increased risk of abandonment and trafficking.
“International law already supports the position that surrogacy is incompatible with human dignity and the rights of both women and children – yet its rapid expansion and cross-border loopholes demand a coordinated global response,” according to Giorgio Mazzoli, Director of UN Advocacy at ADF International.

Iran used American-developed artificial-intelligence models to try to target U.S. Navy ships in the Middle East, according to an Anthropic report warning of emerging national-security dangers.
An Iranian-linked group compiled information from ship and aircraft transponders, military photographs and commercial satellite photos to track American warships
and look for vulnerabilities in their ship-born communications, the report found.
Anthropic said it disrupted the plot by the “threat actor,” which used the advanced AI Claude model.
The finding was one of several threats outlined in the 154-page report that offered up a playbook of how U.S. adversaries are using AI in ways that pose serious threats to national security: developing missiles and aggressive disinformation campaigns, spying on dissidents, and pursuing the potential development of biological weapons.

| 17 | Energy Watchdog Predicts Oil Recovery In 2027
The International Energy Agency (IEA) said —a group of Western nations and their allies—further cut its outlook for global oil demand, now expecting consumption to fall by 2.5 million barrels a day in 2026 to 102.4 million barrels a day, compared with its previous forecast for a 1.6million-barrel-a-day decline.
Gasoline, diesel and other fuels have risen far more sharply than crude, widening the spread between feedstock costs and product prices and pushing refinery margins in the Atlantic Basin to record levels.
That divergence underscores where the market is tightest. Refiners are earning high returns as fuel prices outpace crude costs, giving them a strong incentive to maximize production even as the broader oil system remains constrained.
At the same time, inventories that have helped cushion the shock are being depleted at unprecedented rates. Global observed oil stocks have fallen by about 2.8 million barrels a day on average since the start of the war, according to the IEA. In August alone, inventories declined by 3.1 million barrels a day.
The oil market entered the crisis with a surplus of more than 1 million barrels a day.
The IEA’s outlook improves sharply in 2027. Global oil demand is expected to return to growth, rising by 2.6 million barrels a day, while supply is expected to surge by 8 million barrels a day. OPEC and its allies are expected to account for 5.5 million barrels a day of that increase, with producers outside the group contributing another 2.5 million barrels a day.

Sanitation workers pulled sixteen-hour shifts, seven days a week. One of them, a supervisor named Barry Asnes, said afterward what kept him there. We were attacked on our own soil, in the city where I was born. This was personal.
The operation did not stop for weather. It did not stop for Christmas. It ran until July 2002. Ten months.
By the end, the men and women on that hill had recovered thousands of human remains. Tens of thousands of personal effects. Wallets, badges, wedding bands, photographs, all cleaned and catalogued and returned to families who had nothing else to bury.
When they were finished, the remaining material was placed in a 48-acre section of the landfill, a mound two hundred and twenty-five feet high, and covered.
It is a park now.
Many of the men and women who stood on that hill have lung disease. Asthma. Cancer. PTSD. The air they were breathing, eight and ten and sixteen hours a day, was full of the towers. Some of them have died of it.
Almost nobody knows their names. Almost nobody knows the place.
Mention Fresh Kills and 9/11 in the same sentence, the retired detective wrote, and most people will have no idea what you are talking about.
Here is what you should know.
Two thousand seven hundred and fifty-three people were murdered in those towers. Only about six in ten have ever been identified.
Every one of those identifications came out of a white bucket.

It really is amazing - the things that one stumbles upon when roaming the internet. This piece below moved me deeply. Only one of the reasons for that is because I was in New York a couple of years after the World Trade Centre came down. I was catching up with people Id met online - from New York to Dan Diego to Northern California. The young guy in New York whom I caught up with - lived on Staten Island..he was on one of these work details described below. He told me about it. It was truly horrific.

After September 11, more than a million tons of the World Trade Center was loaded onto barges and shipped to a garbage dump on Staten Island.
Then hundreds of men and women stood at conveyor belts for ten months and picked through every ounce of it by hand.
They were looking for people.
The place is called Fresh Kills. For fifty years it was the largest landfill in the world. It took its last barge of household trash on March 22, 2001, and shut down for good. New York was finally done with it.
Five and a half months later, at two o'clock in the morning on September 12, the landfill's director got a phone call at home. He had just walked in the door.
Two trucks were at the gate. They were carrying pieces of the World Trade Center.
He drove back.
The man who ran the dump would later say, without any drama, that if Fresh Kills had not been closed, this could never have happened. There would have been no room. The garbage would have been in the way.
The site was empty. So that is where the towers went.
Here is how it worked.
At Ground Zero, cranes and grapplers lifted the debris into dump trucks. The trucks drove to a pier on the Hudson. There, the load went onto barges, six hundred tons at a time. The barges were towed down the harbor, past the Statue of Liberty, to Staten Island. More than fifteen hundred barges made the trip.
At Fresh Kills, sanitation workers unloaded them onto a hill.
And then the sorting began.
The debris was mechanically screened into three sizes. Chunks bigger than eight inches. Two to eight inches. A quarter inch to two inches. Anything smaller than a quarter of an inch, the size of a fingernail, fell through the last sieve.
Everything above that size went onto a conveyor belt.
And along the belts stood the detectives.
NYPD. FBI. Port Authority police. Medical examiners. Dressed head to toe in white Tyvek suits, in masks, in gloves, on a hill that stank of jet fuel and pulverized concrete and things nobody wanted to name. Looking down at the belt, hour after hour, as the towers rolled past them a fist-sized chunk at a time.
When they saw something, they reached in and took it, and placed it in a white bucket at their feet.
A wedding ring. A photo ID. A set of keys. A shoe.
A piece of a person.
The white buckets went to a tent that served as a morgue.
The volume was beyond comprehension. In mid-September the operation was processing 1,750 tons of debris a day. By mid-October, 17,500 tons a day. Ten times more. Round the clock. The 200-acre hill was declared a federal crime scene and stayed one for ten months.
A retired NYPD detective later wrote down what a shift looked like, because almost nobody outside knew it existed.
You wake at 3 a.m. You get a giant coffee. You drive two hours in the dark from Orange County, through New Jersey, to Staten Island. You park at the bottom of a hill that looks like the end of the world. You put on the white suit. You go to your belt. You stand there. You look.
Then you drive two hours home and do it again tomorrow.
