Update on mRNA vaccines for Livestock.
I’m often asked if mRNA vaccines are being used on Livestock.
To date the answer is no. However there is a pilot trial underway in NSW for Border disease using an mRNA vaccine.
At this stage, the mRNA vaccine hasn’t been approved by the APVMA.
Whether or not it will be approved remains to be seen but it does seem apparent that the authorities want to use mRNA vaccines in the future.
As I try to point out, using vaccines for a single protein in a pathogen is ineffective as it does not provide long lasting protection against mutations. This is in contrast to traditional vaccines that protect against most of the proteins in a pathogen, which then provides long lasting protection.

Vietnam Requires Facial Recognition For Digital Payments
The Southeast Asian country began requiring biometric data on Monday for any digital transaction of 10 million dong (U.S. $390) or more made by bank or e-wallet transfer. To finalize transactions, customers would scan their faces via phone banking applications.
The State Bank of Vietnam said the regulation is meant "to ensure the safety and security in online payments and bankcard payments," including for digital wallets.
But lawyers and human rights defenders question the necessity of the mass collection of personal data, which creates vulnerability to hacks or leaks. Besides, the practice raises fears of surveillance and control of the customers as the bank share their data with the Communist country’s police.
"Requiring biometric data for digital payments is a dangerous move for Vietnam, given the fact that it has been reported to be facing the most number of cyberattacks in Southeast Asia, followed only by Indonesia," said Ms. Golda Benjamin, Asia-Pacific campaigner at the digital civil rights group Access Now.
"The harms from the breach of biometric information is irreparable for users and the ecosystem."
Vietnam, the Communist country ruled by one-party has been digitizing citizens' information, including identification data, as it builds a national database and moves more services online.

China Rejects Calls For Human-Rights Respect At U.N. Meeting
China on Thursday rejected the recommendations for human-rights reforms including calls for greater freedoms in Hong Kong and for Uyghurs in Xinjiang, as it sought to defend its dismal record at a U.N. meeting.
The U.N. Human Rights Council session in Geneva caps off a review process in which Beijing has strived to fend off criticism following a 2022 U.N. report which said the detention of Uyghurs and other Muslims in China’s Xinjiang region may constitute crimes against humanity. China denies any abuses.
British ambassador Simon Manley complained to the council that China had rejected each and every one of its recommendations, including a call for an end to persecutions of Uyghurs and for the Hong Kong security law to be repealed.
U.S. Human Rights Ambassador Michèle Taylor also voiced disappointment at what she called China’s refusal to take action.
“China’s abuses constitute a rejection of U.N. assessments and recommendations and violate or undermine international commitments,” she said.

Sierra Leone Outlaws Child Marriage
President Julius Maada Bio signed the bill on Tuesday, saying he believed Sierra Leone’s future was female and wanted to give women and girls a platform to reach their full potential.
The law would punish men who marry girls under the age of 18 with up to 15 years in prison and fines of up to 50,000 leones—the currency of Sierra Leone. It would also punish those who attend child marriages, saying authorities will presume they are accomplices unless they can prove they did not know that the child was underage.
Was child marriage legal before?
Under a law passed in 2007, girls were not allowed to be married before turning 18. But a separate 2009 law allowed parents to marry off their daughters before they turned 18, according to the organization Girls Not Brides.
Roughly 30 percent of girls in Sierra Leone are married before turning 18, and 9 percent of them are married before turning 15, according to the organization.

Oil Down
Oil prices edged lower on Thursday, retreating from the previous session’s multi-month highs.
Brent crude futures were down 0.53 per cent, at $86.88 a barrel.
While U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures fell 0.61 per cent, to $83.37 in trade narrowed by the U.S. Independence Day holiday.
