Ecuador’s Ivonne A-Baki has now been nominated by the Tongan government after two straw polls held on 30 July and 21 August failed to produce a front-runner.
A-Baki has openly supported the Trump administrations foreign policy:
“President Trump thinks every country should be doing the same, ‘Make America Great,’ making a strong country dependent on themselves, not depending on others,” she said.
With numerous organisations pushing for the election of a woman, she has referred to her ability to fulfill this role,saying “We need another perspective of what the U.N. was created for.”
Meanwhile there are rumours of another late candidate entering the race in October at Trump's instigation, perhaps FA President Gianni Infantino or Jared Kushner, Trump’s special envoy and son-in-law.

Courts and legislatures grappling with questions about virtual child pornography...

The 2024 UN cybercrime treaty permits the creation, distribution and possession of realistic virtual child pornography. EU delegates insisted on these provisions. The treaty has been signed by over 80 nations, although ratified by only three.
The sex-trafficking industry claims that virtual child pornography is harmless and a form of protected free speech. This was argued successfully in a US supreme court case, Ashcroft v. Free Speech Coalition. However, the latitude provided by this decision was subsequently removed by the US Congress in 2003.
In November 2025 the Trump administration won a majority vote in the UN General Assembly insisting on the criminalisation of all forms of child pornography including virtual pornography. And a Council of Europe Cybercrime Committee has called for a no tolerance approach to virtual child pornography.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said he would “expand and deepen” joint work with Russia in a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin, state's KCNA stated on Tuesday.
In a reply sent on Monday to Putin’s congratulations for North Korea’s 78th founding anniversary, Kim said Pyongyang’s government had a firm will to broaden cooperation with Russia “in a comprehensive way” based on friendship, mutual assistance, and what he described as the countries’ alliance relations.

On Tuesday, oil prices rose across the Australasian markets.
In energy trading, West-Texas Intermediate (WTI), benchmark U.S. crude rose 1.84 per cent to $103.26 a barrel.
Brent crude, the international standard, gained 1.52 per cent to $107.29 a barrel.

PetroChina, China’s largest oil and gas producer reported a 22 per cent jump in first-half net profit to 103.9 billion yuan for the six months to the end of June, as higher crude oil prices boosted earnings.
Overall revenue increased 5.3 per cent to 1.53 trillion yuan, according to the com pany’s interim results.
“We are steadily resuming production at our Middle East projects, with output in the region having recovered to nearly 90 per cent of pre-conflict levels,” Ren Lixin, the company’s executive director and president, said at a results briefing.
The Beijing-based energy giant has benefited from a surge in oil prices amid geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. It reported that its average realised crude oil price rose 15.6 per cent year on year to US$76.53 per barrel, helping operating profit in its oil, gas and new-energy segment climb 15.3 per cent to 100.4 billion yuan.
Higher prices have helped offset weaker oil production. Total crude output fell 2.8 per cent to 462.9 million barrels during the period, largely because overseas output declined 14.2 per cent amid lower production from Middle East projects, according to the interim report. Domestic crude production slipped 0.5 per cent, while domestic natural gas output grew 2.4 per cent.

| 11 | Stolen Electricity Powers Illegal Crypto Farms Across the World
Electricity theft is a growing global problem. It is most common in developing countries because of limited grid infrastructure and reduced oversight, though developed countries are also affected. Theft ranges from individuals tapping into power lines for personal use to organized tapping to support large-scale cryptocurrency mining.
Authorities discovered a clandestine operation in Puebla, where 300 computers continuously mined cryptocurrency using stolen electricity. The operation diverted power from a federal hydroelectric complex and may be connected to a larger money-laundering scheme.
Police say this operation is one of many similar illegal activities in Puebla and neighboring states in central Mexico. The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) is leading a nationwide effort to address electricity theft. Between January and July 2024, 6,346 GWh were lost to theft, meter tampering, and illegal connections, resulting in losses of approximately 13.8 billion pesos (about $817 million). Losses are projected to increase in 2025 and 2026.
Mexico is not alone in addressing this challenge. Electricity theft for cryptocurrency mining is a global problem, impacting both developed countries like England and developing nations. The issue is particularly acute in Southeast Asia. For instance, Malaysian authorities targeted illegal Bitcoin mining operations that stole approximately $1.1 billion in electricity from state-owned Tenaga Nasional between 2020 and 2025. During this time, police identified 14,000 illicit Bitcoin mining sites nationwide. Beyond financial losses, this activity threatens Malaysia's energy security.
"The risk now extends beyond theft," said Deputy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir. "Our facilities may be compromised, which threatens our entire system."
Global authorities are increasingly linking cryptocurrency mining schemes to organized crime.
As Deutsche Welle (DW) reported last month, "Cryptocurrency mining is not inherently criminal, but authorities are increasingly finding links between illegal crypto mining, online gambling, money laundering, and Southeast Asia's industrial-scale cyber scam networks."
In Cambodia, cryptocurrency has been tied to forced labor.
In Kyrgyzstan, often called Cryptostan due to widespread mining that exploits subsidized energy, police report that "virtual assets are being folded into the country's criminal infrastructure like cyber fraud, embezzlement, money laundering, [and] the concealment and movement of illicit funds."
In Mexico, Bitcoin is suspected of being linked to the multiple homicide of a rock star and his family.
