How to Best Utilise the Last Five Days Before the Commerce and Accountancy Optional UPSC Exam — Mains 2026 *By CA Rahul Kumar, DIADEMY IAS* Purpose of Revision 1. Give final touch, maintaining the flow 2. Recency benefit 3. Filling gaps Important Guidelines 1. There is no perfect timetable. Take proper rest on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday nights — Thursday, Friday, Saturday will be hectic. 2. Read solutions of 2025/24/23 PYQs — Paper-1 on Tuesday (1 to 2 papers); read solutions of 2025/24/23 PYQs — Paper-2 on Tuesday (1 to 2 papers). It will give momentum and your mind will shift from GS Mode to Optional Mode 3. Paper-1 has more scoring potential, so fous on micro areas with high potential 4. In lengthy subject like FM - Prepare a micro & macro time table for each day (Day 1 to Day 4): Mention Topic Name/Time — e.g. 30 mins Theories & Environment, 30 mins Culture & Structure, 30 mins Design, etc. Make a micro table like this and follow it diligently from Day 1. 5. Days 1–4 only for Paper-1 & Paper-2; Day 5 focus on compulsory paper & difficult topics in Paper-1 (revision after compulsory paper). 6. Last-moment focus should be on formats, formulae, models— keep taking pictures on mobile and scroll these in a plane if needed. 7. For paper 2, focus on theories, thinkers, diagrams, examples, quotes & conclusions. 8. Give micro attention to the most probable topics in each chapter 9. In between, Just glance through your evaluated answer sheets — FLT, sec test, bits of DAW — it will give you a sense of confidence & awareness about your mistakes. 10. Last 5 Days' UPSC (Commerce Optional) Revision Strategy by Madhav Agarwal (AIR 16, CSE 2024) (as shared by him in the strategy session at DIADEMY IAS) Revision Frequency: In previous attempts, it was possible to revise the Commerce optional only once in the 4–5 days between GS and optional. But for CSE 2024, Madhav tried to do at least two revisions of Paper II during those five days. Subject Rotation Example: Day 1: Revise FM (Financial Management), Tax, OT (Organization Theory), IR (Industrial Relations) Day 2: Revise Cost Accounting, Financial Accounting, OB (Organizational Behaviour), and as time permits, Audit Day 3: Take it a bit easier—use for leftover topics, revise Financial Institutions, and also write a few answers from both papers (to get back into answer writing flow after a long GS phase) Day 4: Focus on revising thinkers, quotes, and value addition material, especially your short notes and collectives Day 5: Briefly look at key concepts, especially from Paper II and selected topics Important Practical Tips: 1) Write Answers in Last Days: Write at least a few answers in these days, even just half a paper, to get back in the commerce-answer-writing mindset after GS. 2) Use Breaks Wisely: During language/regional paper exams, use lunch breaks to revise OTOB/OT/IR topics for 30–60 minutes. Don’t waste gaps; use them for quick revision. 3) Micro-Planning: Make a list in advance of which notebooks/pages/short notes/highlights you will revise on each day. Have all material ready—don't get lost searching. 4) Short Notes Focus: The entire last-phase revision relies on the short, crisp notes you have prepared. Use them for quick scanning. 5) Lunch Break on Saturday: Between language paper and optional, use even 1 hour to revise 1-2 optional topics with highlights or short notes. Philosophy: Don’t try new sources/content in these 5 days—focus only on revising what you have already consolidated. The main aim is to refresh recall speed and ensure you can produce content instantly in the exam. Key Mindset: The last-phase revision is not for learning, but for maximum recall and answer delivery speed. Focus on thinkers, diagrams, value-adds, and answer structure.
