Natural Women's Council Condemns DRCC Advertisement as a Failure of Judgement and Demands Accountability
The Natural Women's Council, a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to the safety and well-being of women, children and families in Ireland, has condemned the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre's controversial advertisement suggesting grandparents should seek consent to hug their grandchildren.
Jana Lunden, founder of the Council said, “Have we really reached a point where grandparents must be made to feel that an affectionate hug is inappropriate? What next - parents asking permission to hug their children or kiss them goodnight?”
Whilst we unequivocally oppose domestic and sexual violence, we believe the DRCC has seriously misplaced its priorities. Teaching children about personal boundaries is important, but portraying ordinary, loving family affection as problematic is neither sensible nor proportionate.
The use of taxpayers' money makes this failure of judgement even more concerning. The public deserves to know who approved this campaign, what scrutiny it received, how public funding was used, and who will be held accountable.
The backlash has damaged public confidence in an organisation entrusted with addressing serious issues affecting women and children. The Board must not dismiss this as a mere communications error. It must answer for the decisions made under its oversight.
The Natural Women's Council has called on Annemarie James, Chairperson of the DRCC Board, to provide a substantive written response within 14 days, explaining its decision-making process, the funding involved and the measures it will take to restore public trust.
Public money is not a blank cheque. Public trust is not an entitlement. Accountability is not optional.
The public deserves better, and the Board must answer for this failure of judgement.

Dear President Connolly,
I am writing to you as a deeply concerned citizen of Ireland to make a direct appeal to you to stand up for the Irish people and our country's long-standing policy of military neutrality.
The government's decision to dismantle the Triple Lock has caused serious concern among people who believe that Ireland should remain a neutral country and that decisions which could put Irish Defence Forces personnel in harm's way must never be taken lightly.
The Triple Lock is an important safeguard that helps ensure Irish participation in overseas peace-support missions is subject to proper international and national oversight. Weakening or removing this protection raises serious questions about Ireland's future, our independence in foreign policy, and the democratic rights of our citizens.
President Connolly, I am asking you to use your voice and the influence of your office to urge the government to reconsider this course of action and protect the principles of Irish neutrality.
Our young people and future generations deserve a country that values peace, diplomacy and independent decision-making, rather than one that risks becoming increasingly involved in international military conflicts. Irish families should not have to fear that safeguards protecting our neutrality are being dismantled without sufficient public debate and accountability.
Ireland has a proud history of peacekeeping and supporting international peace. We should not abandon the principles that have guided us for generations without giving the Irish people a meaningful say in such an important decision.
I understand that the powers of the Presidency are constitutionally defined. Nevertheless, I believe the President has an important public voice and a responsibility to reflect the concerns of citizens who feel that their country's neutrality and democratic safeguards are under threat.
I respectfully ask you to make your position on the Triple Lock clear and to do everything within your constitutional role to encourage the government to protect Ireland's neutrality and ensure that the voices of ordinary Irish people are heard.
Please do not allow the concerns of the Irish people to go unanswered. Our neutrality, our sovereignty and the future of our children and grandchildren matter.
I would appreciate a response to this appeal and clarification of what action, if any, you can take within your constitutional role.

"There’s many people realising now that we live in a post democratic age. Great that you realise it finally, but in reality it was over the moment we took to the polling booths for the second Lisbon vote. We consented to the EU telling us we made the wrong decision. We should have taken to the streets en masse at such a slap in the face. An entity that doesn’t respect a democratic decision once will do it time and again. Not only should we leave the EU immediately, we should have done it then. Iceland has a population less than Tallaght, if they can survive alone so can we. People constantly buy into the propaganda pumped out through RTÉ by gombeen traitors who have made us believe that paying them half of our wages in tax to not represent us as they take orders from Brussels is the only way and the only model available to us. If we took back our fishing, bogs and resources, rejected the nonsense climate change religion and developed a clear energy strategy for the country going forward, we could easily go it alone. The gombeen in the civil service and the government is a parasite. They are the obstacle to Ireland achieving any of this, not the ones who can achieve it. Innovative solutions to development could be aided by tax breaks and other mechanisms in their power to do, but instead the solution to everything is as always, beyond these shores. Including the people. The Irish are never enough for these self loathing shoneens. The EU is just a macro version of the cancer inside our public service only it spreads much faster and will kill us much quicker. It’s time for a serious discussion to start about leaving."

In 1946, Churchill expressed his opinion in his speech at the University of Zurich on what could be the future vision for Europe. He stated, “We must build a kind of United States of Europe.”
Although this concept and the level of interdependence and surrender of sovereignty among Member States did not gain support at that time, 11 years later, the Treaty of Rome (1957) established the ever closer union clause as an objective.
The Preamble of the Treaty of Rome (which established the EEC) states the fundamental objective of creating “ever closer union among the peoples of Europe.”
While initially aimed at encouraging European States to cooperate primarily in the economic realm, over the years and with the renewal of the Founding Treaties, we can observe the evolution of the ever closer union clause—how it has remained in the Treaties, how it has developed within the Union, and simultaneously how the pursuit of economic unity has grown into a clause encompassing multiple domains, all in alignment with the dream of an ever closer union.
Treaty of Rome Preamble: “Determined to lay the foundations of an ever closer union among the peoples of Europe”
