Firewalls control who can enter a network, but what if an attacker gets past the firewall?
That's where IDS and IPS come in.
They continuously monitor network traffic for suspicious or malicious activity.
🧠 What is an IDS?
IDS (Intrusion Detection System) monitors network or system activity and alerts administrators when suspicious behavior is detected.
👉 Think of it as a security camera.
It watches everything but doesn't physically stop an intruder.
🔄 How IDS Works
1️⃣ Monitors network traffic
2️⃣ Compares activity with known attack patterns
3️⃣ If suspicious activity is detected
4️⃣ Sends an alert to the security team

A company suddenly receives thousands of failed login attempts.
The IDS detects this unusual activity and alerts the SOC. The security team investigates.

IPS (Intrusion Prevention System) goes one step further.
It not only detects suspicious activity but can also automatically take preventive action.
👉 Think of it as a security guard.
It watches and can also stop unauthorized activity.
