Furthermore, hesitation is another clue, as liars often need more time to think to create an answer that sounds believable. They may pause too long, repeat your question, or become defensive too quickly if they feel exposed. Instead of giving a vague or clear response, they may try to show avoidance by changing the topic.
Body language also offers helpful insights, though it should never be the sole evidence. Some people fidget with their hands, act in a suspicious way, or show signs of stress that might look like exaggeration. However, nervous or shy people can display the same behaviors even when telling the truth. To be truly convincing, a liar often overexplains, but this lack of credibility usually makes their story feel less natural.
Ultimately, spotting liars is less about catching one isolated gesture and more about noticing when something does not feel right. Since no single sign guarantees dishonesty, the best approach is to observe a person’s baseline behavior, listen carefully, and judge the overall pattern rather than jumping to conclusions.
