We also examined the nature of human action from the perspective of Islamic theologians (mutakallimūn). We began a detailed discussion of the meaning of taklīf (moral/religious obligation) from the perspective of the theologians and the conditions required for it. We also discussed the concept of the rational person and the relationship between taklīf and the existence of reason in human beings, as well as the meaning of rational obligations (takālīf ʿaqlī). We further considered the question of whether, from the perspective of the theologians, it is permissible to impose an obligation on a person whom God knows will ultimately be an unbeliever. Finally, we discussed how these debates affect jurists’ understanding of the Sharīʿa and of religious/legal obligation. #islamic_theology_structure_justice

We considered whether God is capable of performing an evil or improper act, whether He actually performs such acts, and whether God wills to perform an evil or improper act. We also discussed whether God is capable of speaking and communicating His message to human beings. To what extent can human actions be characterized as voluntary? Does a human being possess the power and capacity necessary both to act and to refrain from acting? And what is the relationship between human free will and the encompassing power and will of God? In the beginning of the session, we also discussed briefly about the concept of God from the perspective of jurists, and about how conceiving human beings as morally obligated agents (mukallaf) in Islamic theology has influenced Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), the principles of jurisprudence (uṣūl al-fiqh), and Muslims’ understanding of religion as governed by the Sharīʿa. #islamic_theology_structure_justice YouTube
