Summary: At the beginning of the session, we discussed in detail the approach of modernist religious thinkers to Shi'a studies and how these political approaches can undermine historical research and religious reform. We then examined at length the historical context of the Event of Ghadir. We considered how, if we set aside the sectarian controversies of later periods and seek to understand the Hadith of Ghadir and the term mawla within the context of the Prophet’s era and the formative period of Medina, we should approach this tradition. We argued that the Hadith of Ghadir should fundamentally be understood solely within the framework of the political and moral value system of the Prophet’s time. In fact, the era of the Caliphate and the political concepts that emerged from it developed in a complete rupture with Ghadir and the age of Prophethood. We also discussed how the very fact that this tradition uses the term mawla for Imam Ali rather than imam, caliph, or amir itself points to the authenticity of the report and indicates that it belongs to the discourse of the formative Medinan period. #hadith_ghadir_khumm
