RBI’s special forex-swap facility was introduced to attract foreign currency, strengthen India’s reserves and provide a buffer against pressure on the rupee. Banks mobilised dollars, mostly through 3–5 year FCNR(B) deposits, and swapped them with RBI for rupees, improving domestic liquidity and RBI’s ability to manage currency volatility.
But these are not permanent inflows.
The deposits will eventually mature and dollars must be returned. If the rupee weakens sharply over the next 4–5 years, the existing swaps provide protection, but large maturities, non-renewal of deposits and RBI’s sizeable forward obligations could still create significant liquidity, reserve-management and currency pressures. | 247 |
