Heidi Levine, a Jewish-American WaPo photojournalist thrown to the ground, kicked and beaten with clubs while covering the olive harvest in the West Bank village of Abu Falah, says local Palestinian youths saved her life.
💬 “I probably would have been dead, because for sure it doesn’t take much to kill a person with blows to the head,” she told The Guardian.
Recounting the incident, Levine said the peaceful harvest was interrupted by settlers, who started attacking farmers and the journalists and activists accompanying them. Levine started to run, but was chased down by about a dozen masked individuals.
🔊 “They started kicking me and beating me with sticks. I can’t even count how many times, probably more than a hundred times. I actually tried playing dead so that they would stop. But it didn’t work,” she said. At that point, a group of Palestinians “put themselves in front and were trying to keep [the settlers] away, keep a protective shield, which was amazing. It was like a biblical battle.”
Jasper Nathaniel, another Jewish-American journalist who accompanied Levine and was also attacked, confirmed that the Palestinians helped to save her, and said the Israeli army went after her protectors, not the attacking settlers, during the chaos.
Levine suffered two broken ribs, four puncture wounds and four fractured vertebrae, but promises to continue her work once she feels better.
Israel’s defense minister has threatened a ‘Gaza and Lebanon’-style IDF attack on the West Bank if “jihadist elements” ever targeted settlers.
