U.S. and Iranian negotiators are exploring a phased agreement that would see Tehran reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for Washington easing its economic blockade of Iran.
The talks face a major obstacle as both sides want to preserve leverage: the U.S. controls sanctions pressure, while Iran controls access to a key global energy route. Iran may drop its demand for transit fees in exchange for economic relief but wants to maintain administrative control over the strait. UPDATE: A petition has been filed at the High Court seeking to stop next year's elections(2027 polls) until the IEBC redraws the country's constituency and ward boundaries.
Petitioner Philip Kipkemoi Langat states that the IEBC violated the Constitution by failing to complete a boundary review by March 2024, the deadline set under Article 89. The last review was conducted in 2012.
Langat argues that while the absence of commissioners may explain the delay, it does not excuse it, and that the IEBC's constitutional duty did not lapse when the deadline passed.

The number of bank accounts holding more than Sh500,000 has gone up by 5.7% to 781,977 in 2025, up from 739,803 in 2024, according to CBK data.

UPDATE: Treasury and CBK have drafted a bill that would compel banks, M-Pesa, Airtel Money, and other payment providers to share customer data with licensed third parties, subject to customer consent.
The proposed law seeks to open up the financial sector, boost competition, and enable fintechs to develop new services, while leaving key data access rules to CBK regulations.
But it also sets a Sh250 million minimum capital requirement for mobile money operators and just Sh10 million for smaller payment gateways, a gap wide enough to wipe out small fintechs while barely touching the two giants.

The State Department for Social Protection is upgrading the Enhanced Single Registry and Community Development Management Information System under the World Bank-funded Second Kenya Social and Economic Inclusion Project.
The project also aims to expand support for vulnerable groups and scale the Economic Inclusion Programme from 5 to 20 counties.
