Yosemite Sunset Tony Levin – Stick Markus Reuter – Touch Guitars U8 Deluxe Pat Mastelotto – Acoustic and Electronic Drums, Percussion Recording Locations: Kingston, NY | Dripping Springs, TX | Berlin, Germany. Exactly ten years after their dark, influential 2016 masterpiece Prog Noir, the unparalleled progressive powerhouse STICK MEN is back. Comprising King Crimson’s legendary rhythm section—bassist Tony Levin and drummer Pat Mastelotto—alongside touch-guitar maestro and composer Markus Reuter, the trio has announced their highly anticipated new studio album: Let’s THRAK Again. Arriving 31 years after King Crimson’s watershed 1995 album THRAK, this new record is a profound tribute, fully sanctioned and supported by King Crimson founder Robert Fripp. At the core of Stick Men's breathtaking sound is an instrumental virtuosity that borders on telepathic. Tony Levin once again wields his signature Chapman Stick, while Markus Reuter commands the highly versatile 8-string Touch Guitar. Together, they are setting the modern standard for state-of-the-art touchstyle playing. Anchored by Mastelotto’s hybrid acoustic-electronic percussion, the trio pushes the absolute limits of their instruments, breaking new ground both sonically and compositionally. Let's THRAK Again is a sprawling auditory experience that actively defies cliché. Designing every single patch and tone specifically for this record, the band has crafted a landscape that is heavy, exotic, and intricate—yet surprisingly catchy.

Plymouth: Jamie Saft, Mary Halvorson, Gerald Cleaver, Joe Morris, Chris Lightcap – Plymouth – 2014 Free Improvisation, Psychedelic Rock, Jazz-Rock, Avant-Rock Collaboration 1. Manomet 2. Plimouth 3. Standish Drums – Gerald Cleaver Electric Bass – Chris Lightcap Electric Guitar – Joe Morris, Mary Halvorson Organs, Echoplex Piano, Fender Rhodes – Jamie Saft Recorded and mixed at Potterville International Sound, N.Y. It would probably be incorrect to call either of these recordings a Jamie Saft album, as they are both strong group efforts, but his keyboard work is the connective tissue between them both. The first recording is Plymouth, a great set of dense improvised music from an exciting quintet of musicians. The first tune, 'Manomet', propelled by organ, is a force of nature. The tandem guitar work of Joe Morris and Mary Halvorson ratchet up the intensity as drummer Gerald Cleaver and bassist Chris Lightcap give track a living and breathing pulse. In a way, I hear this first song as fusion in the Tony Williams Lifetime vein, or even early Weather Report with more bite. The intensity that it achieves is just excellent. Track two, ‘Plymouth', starts with a rumble from the lower end of the electric piano, but a third of the way through, we begin hearing the organ creep in along with a heavy beat and fuzzed out and pitch bent lines from the guitars. Track three, 'Standish', clocking in at 30 minutes, is slower to build. Distinct sections emerge with stronger back beats, or guitars creating suspense, ending with a straight ahead jazz-rock climax. With the three tracks spread out over an hour, there's a lot to listen to. It you're looking for the individual and distinctive stylistics of Morris and Halvorson, this isn't the place. If you are looking for a dense patch of hot steamy musical tar festooned with thorny rose stems to roll in, you're home.

T. A Наверное каждый уважающий себя любитель хорошей западной музыки слышал The Dark Side Of The Moon

On her sixth release of 2025, and the sixth in a different alignment, pianist Satoko Fujii continues to blur jazz-genre boundaries and adhere to her mentor Paul Bley’s aphorism, “anything you play twice is once too much.” Burning Wick features her eponymous quartet, revived in 2024 after a 17-year hiatus, with her husband, trumpeter Natsuki Tamura exploring the slippery, silvery, and squeaky sonic potentials of his horn, and electric and acoustic bassist Hayakawa Takeharu (of the Dr. Umezu Band) and drummer Tatsuya Yoshida (founder of the Ruins) adding elements of funk, prog, and free noise. With his facility and command of tone, Takeharu can bring to mind Jaco Pastorius or Steve Swallow. Yoshida takes the precise power of Billy Cobham and Bill Bruford into the outer limits. Each of Fujii’s seven episodic, riff-built compositions deserves close analysis, so different are they in temperament and development. Shamanistic growls momentarily take “Walking through the Border Town” and “Mountain Gnome” into nightmarish territory. Even at hyper-speed amid anvil-hammering, Tamura always finds his way to melodic clarity, and Fujii provides an authoritative center of gravity whether splashing in the rolling thunder as furiously as Cecil Taylor or creating space with breathtaking touch and tenderness.

David and Robert Fripp came together in 1992 to further explore the collaboration started on the Gone to Earth sessions. Recorded in New York and New Orleans, produced by David with engineer David Bottrill, the album features a core group of musicians with Trey Gunn on Chapman Stick, Jerry Marotta on drums, and Marc Anderson on percussion. The First Day was released in July 1993. Robert Fripp and David Sylvian's first official release together, The First Day, is a much funkier and more percussive affair than its bootleg predecessor, The Day Before (which contained radically different versions of these songs). An obvious reason for its higher quality is that it was recorded in a studio, while the bootleg consisted of in-concert demos, and the songs here have been worked to completion. Fripp has found an extremely talented singer/partner in Sylvian, who adds a lot to his quirky compositions. Trey Gunn (who plays a bass-like instrument called the stick) makes each track practically groove and breathe on his own, and allows Fripp to stretch out and experiment in ways previously unheard by this guitar icon. The First Day is a very consistent album, with the musician's excitement and energy easily being felt on such tracks as "God's Monkey," "Brightness," and the ten-minute tour de force "Firepower." Other lengthy tracks follow (the 11-minute "20th Century Dreaming" and the 17-minute "Darshan"), but it never becomes self-indulgent or boring. Certainly one of Robert Fripp's best and more inspired King Crimson side projects.

This followed the release of the album The First Day and is considered by many to be superior to its studio counterpart. Originally mixed by Robert Fripp and released in September 1994 it was remixed by David in 2000 and released the following year. The band features Trey Gunn and Michael Brook. Sylvian / Fripp by Steve Holtje (Creem Magazine September ’93) : “There is no one structure which is universally appropriate,” wrote Robert Fripp in the liner notes to his 1981 album, Let the Power Fall. That bit of wisdom goes a long way towards explaining the far-ranging careers of both Fripp and David Sylvian. Both are respected musicians whose reputations were made with innovative British bands (King Crimson and Japan, respectively) and who both favor collaborations to get their creative juices flowing. It’s no surprise that they’ve just produced an excellent new album together. Fripp played on Sylvian’s 1986 album, Gone to Earth, and at the time and continuing subsequently, the two discussed working together on a more equal basis. Yet it wasn’t until Sylvian was offered a low-key tour of Japan in the beginning of 1992 that the pair, with stick player Trey Gunn, started writing material to be performed together. An Italian tour with the same material followed, and they began laying down tracks–with drummer Jerry Marotta and percussionist Marc Anderson–at the end of the year to preserve for posterity the compatibility they’d fostered. “The record came out rather more loud than if I had been working by myself,” Sylvian admits, “which is quite exciting in a way. Despite the fact that we only used a few of the songs from the tour, it reflects the intensity of the way we sounded.” The First Day (Virgin) certainly does contain the hardest, loudest work Sylvian has done in a long time, but it also includes sections of dream-like Frippertronics that reflect not only Fripp’s input but also Sylvian’s main inclinations in his solo work. Even if there’s nothing likely to be a radio hit, nearly every track is a highlight. “God’s Monkey” has a slippery opening riff with funky rhythm guitar and sparsely syncopated bass and drums. “Jean the Birdman”, the most Sylvianesque track, tells an elusive story with an uneasy musical edge underpinning. “Firepower” is a Crimsonesque power-chord juggernaut featuring a Fripp solo in his trademark buzzing, sustained tone. “Brightness Falls” is the hardest-rocking and most conventional track on the album, keyed to a blasting riff similar to Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady”. “Darshan (The Road to Graceland)” has a hip-hop beat throughout, with brutal bursts of guitar contrasted with th! e steady beat and underlying synth. Sylvian harmonizes with himself on a seemingly paranoid series of admonitions. The result is the record’s most sinister track. The closing instrumental “Bringing Down the Light” is a long, lulling ambient track of cool, rich beauty that relieves the tension of the previous number. David Sylvian is polite but tense. Saturn Sings (No. 18) [4:28] Alto Saxophone – Jon Irabagon Bass – John Hebert Drums – Ches Smith Guitar, Composer – Mary Halvorson Trumpet – Jonathan Finlayson Recorded December 19th & 20th, 2009 at Firehouse 12. Saturn Sings is guitarist/composer Mary Halvorson's highly anticipated follow-up to her acclaimed 2008 debut, Dragon's Head (Firehouse 12). It documents a new book of music written for her latest ensemble, the Mary Halvorson Quintet, which adds fellow New Yorkers Jonathan Finlayson (trumpet) and Jon Irabagon (alto saxophone) to her longstanding trio with bassist John Hebert and drummer Ches Smith. These compositions, her first for a band with horns, employ harmonies influenced by such diverse inspirations as Clifford Brown, Sam Cooke and The Soul Stirrers, Marvin Gaye, Thelonious Monk, Alexander Scriabin, Archie Shepp, Dmitri Shostakovich and Robert Wyatt. "Saturn Sings is a continuation of the concepts and ideas heard on Dragon's Head," Ms. Halvorson explains. "My interest in harmony has grown and I'm attempting to build on the foundation of guitar, bass and drums while writing a lot of close-knit and often dissonant horn lines. There are now many other directions to go in, and the horns push the trio into different realms and vice-versa. The more we perform, the more the music gets both looser and tighter; tighter because we are working on developing a band sound, and looser because we are comfortable and trust each other, which allows us the freedom to take chances and to explore within the framework of the piece."
