THE CATASTROPHIC EFFECTS OF HURRICANE CHIDO ON MAYOTTE, FRANCE. Several hundred people - and possibly thousands - could be dead after the most powerful cyclone in almost 100 years struck the French Indian Ocean island of Mayotte. When asked about the death toll, the French Interior Ministry said that "it will be difficult to count all the victims", at this stage an exact figure could not be determined. Mayotte is almost entirely dependent on French financial aid, with about 75 per cent of the population living below the poverty line and one in three unemployed. Aerial footage provided by the French gendarmerie shows the wreckage of hundreds of makeshift houses scattered across the hills of one of Mayotte's islands, which has become a centre for illegal immigration from the nearby Comoros Islands.
