SUBJECT: DECLARATION OF INDEFINITE STRIKE ACTION BY TEACHERS IN THE ASHANTI REGION Dear Sir/Madam, RE: COMMENCEMENT OF INDEFINITE STRIKE We, the concerned teachers of the Ashanti Region, write to you regarding the "Urgent Notice to All Teachers" issued by the national leadership of the Teacher Unions on Tuesday, 22nd September 2026, concerning the government's failure to fulfill its agreement on promotion salaries and arrears. We wish to draw your attention specifically to paragraph three (3) of that notice, which stated: "We hereby serve notice that if by mid-day, Thursday, 24th September, 2026, all the issues are not addressed, the Teacher Unions will not be able to restrain the teachers anymore and whatever happens, the duty bearers should take full responsibility. This is not a threat but a promise." As of today, Friday, 25th September 2026, the mid-day Thursday deadline has passed. The government has failed to address the critical issues, including the 2025 promotion placements, payment of arrears, renewal of the Collective Agreement, and the payment of the Deprived Area Allowance. Consequently, in direct response to this gross disregard and in fulfillment of the promise made in the aforementioned paragraph, we, the teachers of the Ashanti Region, hereby declare the commencement of an INDEFINITE STRIKE ACTION with immediate effect. We are taking this decisive step because the duty bearers have left us with no alternative. We can no longer be restrained. Therefore, we call on all teachers across the Ashanti Region to: 1. Withdraw their services immediately from all public basic and second-cycle institutions. 2. Remain calm, united, and strictly adhere to all directives issued by our regional coordinating team. 3. Ignore any intimidation, as the government must take full responsibility for the consequences of this industrial action. We shall communicate our next line of action in due course. Thank you. TEACHER UNIONS URGENT NOTICE TO ALL TEACHERS GOVERNMENT FAILED TO FULFILL ITS AGREEMENT WITH TEACHER UNIONS ON PROMOTION SALARIES AND ARREARS It has come to the attention of the Teacher Unions that the 2025 promotion placement, together with the payment of arrears, have not been fully effected. This is in clear violation of the agreement reached with government to automatically place all affected teachers by close of September, 2026. This is not only disturbing and disappointing but has also ignited further tension and anger amongst the rank-and-file of teachers across the country, owning to the disregard in resolving the outstanding issues confronting teachers including: 1. Renewal of the Collective Agreement 2. Payment of Deprived Area Allowance among others. We hereby serve notice that if by mid-day, Thursday, 24th September, 2026, all the issues are not addressed, the Teacher Unions will not be able to restrain the teachers anymore and whatever happens, the duty bearers should take full responsibility. *This is not a threat but a promise.* We therefore call on all teachers to: 1. 2025 PROMOTED TEACHERS’ INTENDED STRIKE ACTION We, the 2025 promoted teachers, wish to call on all Pre-Tertiary Teachers across the country to join us in a collective industrial action to demand the payment of our promotion-related salary arrears and the implementation of our new salary scales. Once again, the Government and the Ghana Education Service (GES) have failed to fulfil their commitments to teachers who have been duly promoted. This situation cannot continue in a country where equity, fairness, and justice are fundamental principles. If immediate and concrete action is not taken, there is a genuine concern that teachers will continue to face similar challenges whenever they are promoted. It is therefore important that we stand together to demand a fair and transparent system that respects teachers and recognises their professional progression. In addition to the payment of outstanding promotion-related salaries, we are also calling for the introduction of a clear and consistent annual timetable for promotion activities, including the promotion process, interviews, results, upgrading, and payment. Such a timetable will provide certainty and help prevent the recurring delays experienced by teachers. The intended strike action is meant to draw the attention of the Government and all relevant education stakeholders to the important role teachers play in the development of Ghana. Teachers are central to the education and development of the nation's human resources, and their professional progression should therefore be treated with the seriousness it deserves. We therefore respectfully call on the Minister of Education and the Ghana Education Service to, as a matter of urgency, engage the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) and ensure that all affected teachers are placed on their appropriate salary scales and paid their outstanding promotion-related entitlements before the end of the month, in accordance with the commitment communicated by the Ministry of Education. We are also calling for an immediate official statement from the relevant authorities, clearly outlining the measures being taken and directing the appropriate institutions to effect payment to all affected teachers. A timely and satisfactory resolution of this matter will be the most effective way to avert the intended strike action. Fellow teachers, let us remain united, calm, and prepared to defend our legitimate professional interests. Our promotion is not a favour.
