United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on major artificial intelligence companies to power all of their data centers with renewable energy by 2030. The Taliban announced that 497 families, comprising 2,615 people, were returned to Afghanistan from neighboring countries yesterday. The dispute between Juma Khan Fateh, an influential Taliban commander in Badakhshan, and the group’s leadership appears on the surface to center on mines, local influence, and the administration of certain districts in Badakhshan. Yet the significance of this case extends well beyond a local disagreement. What is unfolding in Badakhshan today is, in effect, the second serious test the Taliban have faced in confronting open dissent from one of their well-known commanders since returning to power. The central question is what the Taliban will do about Juma Khan Fateh. Will they follow their usual pattern and choose suppression, or will they move toward reconciliation this time? At first glance, the answer does not seem especially difficult, since experience shows that when confronted with internal opposition, the Taliban have generally preferred elimination over accommodation, a preference rooted not merely in security concerns but in the very nature of the group. The severity of the Taliban’s handling of the cases of Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai and Mawlawi Mehdi makes clear that when facing internal dissenters, the group opts for confrontation rather than negotiation. Several residents of Kandahar province have expressed concern over the weak culture of reading in the province. They say that disappointment and lack of motivation are among the most important factors behind young people’s disinterest in reading books. According to them, girls in Kandahar are not allowed to go to bookstores, libraries, or even to read, and many of them are also deprived of access to mobile phones. Despite the expansion of medical services, several citizens of Afghanistan still turn to shrines in Ghazni province to treat infertility, mental disorders, and certain illnesses, including cancer.
