The Significant Surge in Instant Payments
Ethiopia's national payment switch, EthSwitch, has released its latest fiscal results, demonstrating that the migration toward a cashless economy is accelerating. The platform officially cleared $8 Billion (ETB 1.26 Trillion) in interoperable digital transactions, processing 387 million transactions across its entire network.
The primary driver of this growth is person-to-person (P2P) transfers. Fueled by the migration to the new EthioPay Instant Payment System (IPS)which recently processed over 1 million transactions in a single day P2P accounted for 242.6 million transactions, representing four-fifths of the network's total value.
However, a significant structural gap remains: merchant adoption is lagging. Interoperable QR payments (ETHQR) recorded only 551,000 transactions, as consumers continue to rely on P2P workarounds at checkout. For local fintech developers, the challenge is evident: the infrastructure is prepared, but the ecosystem requires seamless, friction-free merchant integration layers to capture the next retail wave.
