At least three Indian oil refiners and a major global energy company plan to stop using vessels named on Iran’s new blacklist, including for ship-to-ship (STS) transfers, citing security concerns, four sources with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters this week.
Iran announced on Sunday a blacklist of 45 vessels it said had violated its rules for transiting the Strait of Hormuz, warning that it would also act against ships conducting cargo transfers with those vessels.
The vessels on Iran’s list could face fines, detention and cargo confiscation, according to a post on X by the Persian Gulf Strait Authority.
"We will avoid our chartered vessels dealing or STS or anything to do with non-compliant ships for Middle Eastern cargoes," said one of the sources, who works at an Indian refinery.
Some of the tankers on Iran’s list are owned or chartered by Saudi Aramco and Abu Dhabi National Oil Co (ADNOC). The extremist-led Damascus government is set to be removed from the US terror list, reports on 22 August said – following months of direct cooperation with Washington on several matters, including a crackdown on Palestinian and Lebanese resistance, as well as direct talks with Israel.
The development comes despite the thousands of sectarian killings carried out by new Syrian government troops since the fall of former president Bashar al-Assad’s administration.
A US congressional review was set to be completed on Saturday to assess if the new authorities in Damascus had met the appropriate conditions for removal from the terror list.
“[US Secretary of State Marco] Rubio’s July recommendation to revoke the designation reflected his assessment that Syria had met the legal and political conditions required for removal,” a US State Department official told the New Arab over the weekend.
A Syrian official also addressed the matter on social media.
