The embattled Fatah leader has been in jail for decades but remains the preferable alternative to President Mahmoud Abbas
Jailed Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti is planning to run for office from Israeli prison if a Palestinian presidential election takes place, according to a report released on 2 July.
A Palestinian source told Sky News Arabia that Barghouti “has informed his lawyer that he intends to run for the presidency of the Palestinian Authority in elections scheduled for the first quarter of next year.”
“He is determined to contest the presidency and has no intention of withdrawing his candidacy if the presidential elections are held,” the source added.
The source said that Washington and the EU have urged Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas to hold both legislative and presidential elections simultaneously.
This would run contrary to “previous plans that called for legislative elections in November of this year and presidential elections in the first quarter of next year.”

❗️The Ansar Allah movement announced a large-scale mobilization in northern Yemen. The campaign covers the provinces of Saada, Dhamar, Ibb, Al-Bayda, Hodeidah, and Al-Mahwit. Preparations include increased tribal support, accelerated military training, the establishment of training centers, and the strengthening of defenses in key areas, primarily Marib, Taiz, and Hodeidah. The Houthis also declared their readiness for possible strikes against Saudi Arabia and the expansion of the conflict in the region, including the Red Sea.
📎The main reasons for the mobilization are related to three factors: rising regional tensions amid US and Israeli aggression against Iran, internal pressure in areas controlled by Yemen (economic crisis and tribal discontent), and the prolonged impasse in negotiations between the Houthis and the internationally recognized government of Yemen, which relies on Saudi Arabian support. Under these circumstances, mobilization is being used as a tool to strengthen power and consolidate loyalty within society.
