New Museum Celebrates the World of Jellyfish They have no brains, hearts or bones, and they have been in the world's oceans for hundreds of millions of years. Jellyfish might seem like something from another planet, but a new museum in the US is hoping to show people what a beautiful and important part of our world they are. The Jellyfish Museum in Pompano Beach, Florida, is believed to be the first museum in the US dedicated to these animals, and one of the few such spaces in the world, according to the city and the museum's founders. It was created by Alex and Yana Yanovsky, who previously ran aquariums in Ukraine, including their first jellyfish museum in Kyiv. Yana thought of the idea for the jellyfish museum after noticing how popular the jellyfish were at their other aquariums. Jellyfish have been found in our oceans for over 500 million years, making them older than the dinosaurs — and even trees! Their long history is part of their allure, along with their mesmerizing movements. The Jellyfish Museum is home to about 20 species of jellyfish found in Florida waters and other parts of the world. Some current occupants in the museum's 21 tanks include Japanese sea nettles, moon jellyfish, spotted jellies and upside-down jellyfish. The museum also has guides to teach people about jellyfish and the importance of protecting them. "The biggest idea here is to leave people with the feeling that they know something more about the population of jellyfish," museum manager Iryna Pelypkanych said. "Because so far, we know around 4,000 different species that can be called jellyfish."
