Americans Use Less Cash, but Still Carry It Americans are using less and less cash — but many still cary it. That's what Pew Research Center found in a new survey. In May and June, Pew asked almost 10,000 US adults about their cash use. And 42% now say that, in a typical week, they don't use any cash at all to pay for things. That's up from 24% in 2015. Cash is least important for the people with the most money. Among households making $100,000 or more a year, just 4% say they use cash for everything or almost everything. But among households making less than $30,000 a year, 26% still use cash for everything or almost everything. Young Americans also don't use much cash. More than half of adults under 30 don't use any cash in a typical week. But just one-third of those 65 and older say they don't use cash. While they don't use cash as much as they used to, many Americans still carry it. Forty-six percent say they carry cash always or most of the time — and that goes up to 69% among those 65 and older. And while they're the group that's least likely to use it, half of Americans in households making $100,000 or more still say they carry cash always or most of the time. But just 29% of adults under 30 carry cash always or most of the time — and 45% say they rarely or never do. #reading_for_today
