Repost from من روحي.
there is something deeply dangerous about developing a sharp eye for the faults of people while slowly becoming familiar with our own. a believer’s awareness of sin should always bring them back to themselves. every fault we notice should remind us that we too stand before Allāh سبحانه وتعالى carrying deeds no one knows about, weaknesses we keep returning to, and sins we desperately need forgiven. the salaf were deeply occupied with muhasabah because knowing the condition of your own soul leaves very little room for self-righteousness. correction has its place, enjoining good and forbidding evil has its place, yet the heart must remain humble while doing it. fear the day another person’s sin disgusts you while your own no longer makes your heart ache. keep asking Allāh سبحانه وتعالى for a heart that recognizes sin wherever it exists, beginning with the soul you will answer for.

Knowledge will raise a house that has no support, and ignorance will destroy a house of might and honor.

Ibn al Qayyim
There is nothing that destroy righteous actions more than self-amazement and self admiration.

The person who repents is like someone who has no sins ‏رواه احمد ١٣٢/٢

Bilāl ibn Saʿd said : قال بلال بن سعد : ذكرك حسناتك ونسيانك سيئاتك غرة You remembering your good deeds and forgetting your bad deeds is self-deception Ḥilyat al‑Awliyāʾ - Vol. 5 Page. 223

Questions? (might get to a few.)

Al-Haleem : الحليم The one who bestows favours, both outward and inward, lavishly to His creation despite their many acts of disobedience and transgression. He’s gentle upon those that disobey Him and in censuring them so that perchance they may repent, and gives them respite so that they become sorrowful (for their sins). Source: Taysir al-Karim ar-Rahman fee Tafsir al-Qur’an by as-Sa’di

Al-Hasan al-Basri was asked: ما الإيمان؟ قال: الصبر والسماحة. فقيل له ما الصبر والسماحة؟ قال: الصبر عن محارم الله، والسماحة بفرائض الله
What is eman? He said, Patience and generosity. He was then asked, What is patience and generosity? He replied, (Being) patient upon (refraining from) whatever Allah has made forbidden, and being generous in enacting whatever Allah has obligated.

In the Qur'ān, the word "darkness" is used in a plural form, while the word "light" is singular. Ibn al-Qayyim said:
This is from the miracles of the Qur'ān because there are many paths that lead to darkness, but only one leads to light.
{بداية الفوائد ١/١٢٧}

A forgotten/Abandoned Sunnah When Asked “How Are You?” ‎سال عمر الرجل كيف أنت؟ ‎فقل: أحمد الله إليك ‎فقل عمر الرجل: ‎ذلك الذي أردة منك Anās b. Mālik رضي الله عنه reported that he heard 'Umar b. al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله عنه asked a man: How are you? He said: Ahmad-Allaahu Ilayk (I praise Allāh to you). So 'Umar said to the man: That is what I wanted (to hear) from you. {رواه البخاري في الأدب المفرد رقم ٤٧٣}

Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah said : حدثنا عبد الله قال: حدثت، عن سفيان بن عيينة، قال : لا تنظروا إلى عقل الرجل في كلامه ولكن انظروا إلى عقله في مخارج أموره Do not look at a man’s intelligence in his speech; rather, look at his intelligence in how he handles his affairs

‎ فَلَا تَخۡضَعۡنَ بِٱلۡقَوۡلِ And do not be soft in speech. As-Suddi and others:  This means (women should) not be gentle in speech when addressing men. {تفيسر ابن كثير ٣٣/٣٢}

Propeht ﷺ said,
O Abu Dharr do you say an abundance of possessions is wealth?
He رضي الله عنه said
Yes
Prophet ﷺ said,
Do you say a lack of possessions is poverty?
He رضي الله عنه said
Yes
Prophet ﷺ repeated this three times, then he said,
Wealth is in the heart and poverty is in the heart. Whoever is wealthy in his heart will not be harmed no matter what happens in the world. Whoever is impoverished in his heart will not be satisfied no matter how much he has in the world. Verily he will only be harmed by the greed of his own soul.
[Al Mu’jam al Kabir 2/154]

A society can become so accustomed to borrowed standards that it begins to measure honour by how closely it resembles others. When the way of the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions is viewed as outdated, the problem reaches deeper than outward imitation. It reflects a shift in what the heart has learned to admire. True honour is found in knowing what deserves to be followed, what deserves to be questioned, and whose example is worthy of being carried forward. May Allāh سبحانه وتعالى keep our hearts firm upon the truth, make the Sunnah beloved to us, and protect us from being deceived by what the world presents as honour. O Allāh, make faith beloved to us, beautify it in our hearts, and keep us firm upon the truth.

Ibn 'Uthaymeen said:
The problem now is that there are some people who think that imitating the Kuffar is a glory and they think that returning to what the Prophet and his Companions were upon is backwardness.

Sh. Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān:
As for him saying ‘Astaghfirullāh’ with his tongue but persisting upon sins/disobedience with his actions, then he is a liar (and) his Istighfār will not benefit him,
as Fuḍayl b. ‘Iyāḍ said:
'Seeking Allāh’s Forgiveness while not abandoning (sins) is the repentance of liars’.

Avoiding sins and leaving what does not concern you illuminates the heart, for the heart is affected by what a person repeatedly does and focuses on. A beautiful reminder that it isn't just about "doing good", but equally about removing what is unnecessarily occupying your heart.
