'Maria del Carmen Abascal, the 87-year-old woman whose eviction from her Madrid home sparked a government crisis in Spain, has died, the Madrid Tenants’ Union announced on Tuesday.
Known in Spain simply as Maricarmen, she died just weeks after hundreds of people turned up to her door trying to prevent her from being evicted from the home where she lived for more than 70 years.
She was forcibly removed on a stretcher after the private investment company, which owns the building in Madrid’s upmarket Retiro district, hiked her rent from €500 ($560) to €2,650 ($2,970) – an amount that was unaffordable for the pensioner.
“We regret to announce that Maricarmen has passed away today. As you all know, she was evicted on September 23, and has remained in hospital ever since,” the union said Wednesday.'

| 5 | The 'middle class' is a very convenient category for the ruling class to manipulate the populace. The majority are shoved into this category – are made to shove themselves into it, even.
The way it's used colloquially, 'middle class' is such a broad category that it's practically meaningless. Why, even many rich people pretend to be "middle class" (e.g., India's richest man still thinks he is middle class at heart). And what's worse, a majority of utterly poor people also identify themselves as "middle class" – well, after all, who would want to go out and say "I'm poor/broke". As a result, almost everybody is "middle class" nowadays, to the point that almost nobody is actually middle class.
The popular category of "middle class" is not merely misleading, but also harmful... it hinders class consciousness and solidarity among the working class, it masks the stark class conflict that always exists between the working class and the capitalists.
What needs to be done, then?
The pointless and overly abused category of middle class needs to be discredited and "working class" needs to be popularized, people should be encouraged to identify with it. If you're asked which economic class you belong to, you can say "working class"; or, if someone implies you belong to the middle class, you can politely correct them and say that you're actually from the "working class".
Under the current system, instead of dividing a population into "rich", "middle class" & "poor", it's better to broadly classify them into two classes: the "capitalists" and the "working class", the latter making up the majority of the global population (also true for virtually any nation-state now).
Most of us would say, without any hesitation, "I'm a working person" – then, we should also be able to say, without any hesitation, "I belong to the working class", rather than "I belong to the middle class". | 294 |
