I'm about to say some words as a mathematician, but an outsider one. I've left the academia and I am done with doing research; but it doesn't imply that I have no opinion about these foolish excitements regarding the so called AI revolution in mathematics. Here I assume that I'm talking to a bunch of friends who are not necessarily familiar with the cutting edge of mathematical achievements; so I'm gonna confine myself to a non-technical arrangement (technical disagreements to my comment are all welcome anyway). First of all, it's worth noting that "computer generated" proofs is not a new phenomena in mathematics, the Four Color Theorem is a good example. It is of course true that nowadays AI can do much more than that, but under a closer scrutiny, the nature of its capabilities is not new at all. Formerly, you could use a powerful computer to cancel out many possibilities or check the validity of a conjecture against a huge number of examples. Now it has come to ideas; but only the existing ideas in the mathematical literature. Yes; sure it can combine them to end up with a seemingly new one; but strictly speaking, such a thing is not new. Personally, as a (former) pure mathematician, I used to think of math as kinda art---and I still do. So to my eyes, what we see these say is not a great achievement, but a vivid sign that mathematicians (I'm talking about the mainstream) themselves have watered down their work pathetically; so practically what the majority really do is merely repeating what they have already have in their disposal. Thus it shouldn't come as surprise that their works could be better taken care of by a learning machine. It's neither their fault nor because of their incapablity, but the nasty craziness about productivity, i.e. the industrial mindset which has taken over the academia all around the world for decades. Art in general, and music in particular is a good examples to make a comparison. The main stream music is crazy about productivity too, so it's horseshit in the majority of cases, and even the so called good ones don't seem to be genuinely new. So AI can handle it too. Thus to make the long story short, let me repeat a few words from one of the greatest artists of all time, Pablo Picasso: "People reach the status of artist only after crossing the maximum numbers of barriers". In an arguable sense, the same goes with mathematics. So the main question is whether AI is capable of crossing barriers? Impossible; due to its very nature!
