| 4 | ✨ Getting Into Cornell Dyson: Building Extracurriculars That Reflect Your Personality and Goals
Yesterday, together with Jasmina Baktiyorova, we explored how to build a strong application when your are still exploring which direction to take.
We discussed why certainty isn't a prerequisite for a strong application, why many of us in Central Asia grow up with a fundamentally different understanding of what a major is and how it informs our choices, and how to build the story that ties your application together.
This week, we will continue the conversation with Alpamis Makhmutov, an incoming student at Cornell University's Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management, who received a $362,000 scholarship to study Sustainable Business Management and Sustainable Technologies.
In Episode IX of the Freshman Getting In series, we will talk about building activities that genuinely reflect your personality, values, and long-term goals, and how that became the foundation of Alpamis's application.
Join us for an inside look at the decisions, experiences, and long-term thinking that helped Alpamis build a successful application to Cornell.

| 7 | 🎉 Welcome to NYU Abu Dhabi, Imona!
Imona Bustonbayeva, a graduate of Target International School, has been admitted to NYU Abu Dhabi on a scholarship worth over $385,000.
Imona joined Freshman by the end of 10th grade, starting with Advanced English before moving through the Admissions Program and later Flexible Support. Advanced English pushed her to read far more than was expected at school, and though she did not always enjoy it at first, she found herself drawn into material she would once have skipped. Over time, the program pushed her to question beliefs she had never really examined and to rebuild her values in her own way rather than simply inheriting them.
She worked closely with Valera throughout her consultations, and with Dr. Lyusyena on a research paper examining how gender perceptions of work and education contribute to intergenerational poverty in rural Central Asia, along with the divide between urban and rural attitudes. Rustam helped her refine her writing. Sanjar worked with her on sharpening her extracurricular descriptions. And Sega guided her through more than a dozen drafts of her personal statement and supplemental essays before landing on versions that felt true to her.
Outside the classroom, Imona interned at the Center for Economic Research and Reforms, a position she secured after persistently following up until the center's HR reached out to her directly. She later approached a government official in person to pitch a project, which eventually grew into an office based initiative that expanded into several regions after she recruited regional coordinators at a summer camp for top students.
At NYU Abu Dhabi, Imona plans to explore engineering after studying business, economics, IT, and math at the A-level, and is keeping her options open between engineering and economics. She's still weighing paths after graduation, from returning to Uzbekistan to work as an economist to exploring consulting or investment banking. She hopes to advocate for young women, particularly in more conservative of the country, to have greater freedom to express themselves without judgment.
Reflecting on her journey with Freshman, Imona said:
"Freshman helped me grow so much in such a short period of time. My mentors pushed me constantly, and even though it didn't always feel like it in the moment, looking back now, especially working here myself, I can see exactly how much I changed."
We wish Imona the best of luck at NYU Abu Dhabi, and look forward to seeing the impact she makes. 🌟

| 10 | 🎉 Welcome to KAIST, Manzilbek!
Manzilbek Karlibaev, a graduate of the Presidential School in Nukus, has been admitted to KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) on a Full-Ride scholarship worth over $29,000 to pursue studies in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
Manzilbek joined the Freshman Full Support in October, using a gap year to work through a tighter timeline than most applicants face. Throughout the process, he worked closely with Valera, Sega, Tyler, and Dr. Lyusyena on his essays, and with Rustam on a piece exploring the ethics of emotion in artificial intelligence. Dr. Lyusyena also supported his research into chatbot implementation methodologies.
Outside the classroom, Manzilbek interned in Nukus at Kartech LTD, where he helped develop a portable gas detector for vulnerable families, and attended Stanford's summer program for data science. He currently works full time at an AI lab, conducting research and development on large language models. He has also been part of his school's comedy program and has done fencing competitively for years.
Manzilbek chose KAIST for its strength in AI and machine learning research, and hopes to join a lab in Daejeon, drawn to the city's scientific community and to the chance to immerse himself in Korean culture.
Reflecting on his journey with Freshman, Manzilbek said:
"I'll admit I went in skeptical, expecting another generic admissions program, but the team's genuine investment in me completely changed that impression. What I valued most was the freedom to write things that actually sounded like me. My personal statement ended up as a piece of science fiction, one of my Duke essays was built around a video game, and I even got to write about J. Cole's lyrics for another. None of that would have happened somewhere more traditional.
What people don't always mention is the alumni network. The application support matters, but having a community to stay connected to afterward has turned out to be just as valuable, and it's something I'd tell any future applicant to think about."
We wish Manzilbek the best of luck at KAIST, and look forward to seeing where his work in AI and machine learning takes him.
