Gajdusek often claimed that he was more proud of his anthropological studies among the Fore and Anga people of Micronesia than the research that brought him the ultimate prize. Intrigued by his two years studying rabies, plague, arbovirus infections and scurvy at the Institut Pasteur in Tehran, Iran, Gajdusek scoured the Hindu Kush, the jungles of South America, the coasts and mountains of New Britain and the swamps and high valleys of Papua New Guinea and Malaysia searching for a rare disease he could make his own.
He found it when he met Dr Vincent Zigas, an Estonian medical officer who served the Fore people in eastern Papua New Guinea. | 17 | The issue is that we've been conditioned and funneled into social media as virtual community/town square... but it rarely to never evolves into real action or consistency- which is what makes a community. I'm not saying it doesn't have its uses and necessity, but it does tend to make people get anxiety, rage build up, and chase their tails without ever organizing in the flesh. It also is being watched by the “authorities.” As someone who has organized in the flesh since I was a child-unions were a MAJOR way to organize that was non-commodified and non-religious.... Community centers no longer really exist.... Brick and mortar shopping is essentially gone.... Ultimately my point is that there are no places to organize in physical form that are not surveilled entirely. You can't even use a landline anymore- they were all changed to digital networks.... What can we do? I don't have all the answers, because there are many ways to do things that work.... But we NEED to start organizing beyond ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation (no- I do not believe pdf-feelia is an orientation), political affiliation, etc. We need to restore physical community networks where we build together, repair together, share resources, and brain storm IN PERSON and off record. We also need to get past learned helplessness, and also being so weak with declaring the severity of the crimes being committed AND the consequences that SHOULD be delivered. People refuse to even call the genocidal agendas/policies and total destruction of ecosystems for tech or monopoly…. What they are: crimes against humanity & nature, treason, war crimes….
