. The Torture Endured by the Companions Because of their Adherence to Tawheed Shaykh Rabee ibn Hadee The Companions of Allaah’s Messenger (صلّى الله عليه وسلّم) suffered the worst forms of torture because of their adherence to the correct ‘aqeedah, and their making all worship purely and sincerely for Allaah alone, and their rejection of shirk and kufr. From ’Abdullaah ibn Mas’ood, radiyallaahu ‘anhu, who said, “The first people to openly proclaim their Islaam were seven: Allaah’s Messenger (صلّى الله عليه وسلّم) , Aboo Bakr, ’Ammaar and his mother Sumayyah, Suhayb, Bilaal and al-Miqdaad. So as for Allaah’s Messenger (صلّى الله عليه وسلّم), Allaah gave him protection through his uncle Aboo Taalib. As for Aboo Bakr, Allaah gave him protection through his people. But as for the rest of them, the Mushriks would take hold of them and dress them in iron armour and place them to scorch and roast in the sun. There was not one of them except that they responded to them except Bilaal, for his soul became as nothing to him for Allaah’s sake, and his people had no respect for him. So they gave him to the children who used to drag him around the streets of Makkah and he would say repeatedly, ‘(He who has the right to worship is) One, One.’” [1] In the Seerah of Ibn Hishaam [2] there occurs: ’Umayyah ibn Khalf used to take him (Bilaal) out in the midday heat of the sun, and throw him down upon his back, on the ground of the flat valley bed of Makkah, and he would order for a large rock to be placed on his chest. Then he would say, “By Allaah, you will stay like this until you die, unless you disbelieve in Muhammad (صلّى الله عليه وسلّم) and you worship al-Laat and al-’Uzzaa.” So he would say, whilst he was in that condition, “(He who alone has the right to worship is) One, One.” Sumayyah was tortured until death because of the ‘aqeedah of tawheed not becasue she was a political leader. So from Mujaahid who said, “The first martyr in Islaam was Sumayyah the mother of ’Ammaar. Aboo Jahl thrust a spear into her abdomen.” [3] Ibn Sa’d said, “She accepted Islaam early on in Makkah and she was one of those who was tortured to force them to abandon their religion. But she bore and endured it until Aboo Jahl came to her and thrust a spear into her abdomen and she died.” [4] Footnotes: [1] Reported by al-Haakim in al-Mustadrak (3/284) and he declared it saheeh and adh-Dhahabee mentioned it in Siyar A’laamin-Nubalaa (1/348) and he said, “It has a saheeh chain of narration…” [2] Seerah of Ibn Hishaam (1/318). [3] At-Tabaqaat of Ibn Sa’d (8/264/265). He said, “Ismaa’eel ibn ’Umar, Abul-Mundhir related to us that Sufyaan ath-Thawree narrated to us from Mansoor from Mujaahid who said…” This is a saheeh chain of narration to Mujaahid. [4] Tabaqaat Ibn Sa’d (8/264). 📌 Difference between Kufr and Shirk Imam Ibn Baz Bismillaah Q: A Muslim sister N. S. A from Riyadh says: What is the difference between Kufr (disbelief) and Shirk (associating others with Allah in His Divinity or worship)? Please, advise. May Allah reward you! Answer by Imam Ibn Baz (rahimahullaah): Kufr is the denial and concealment of the Truth such as those who deny the obligation of Salah, Zakah, Sawm, Hajj in case of being financially and physically able, and dutifulness to one’s parents, and so on. It is also like those who deny the prohibition of Zina (premarital sexual intercourse and/or adultery), consuming Khamr (intoxicants), and disobeying one’s parents. Shirk is to devote the acts of worship to anything beside Allah (Exalted be He) such as those who seek the help of the dead, the absent, the Jinn, idols, the stars, and so on or those who offer sacrifices or make vows to them. A Kafir (disbeliever) may be called a Mushrik (one who associates others with Allah in His Divinity or worship) and vice versa. Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) says, “And whoever invokes (or worships), besides Allâh, any other ilâh (god), of whom he has no proof; then his reckoning is only with his Lord. Surely! AlKâfirûn (the disbelievers in Allâh and in the Oneness of Allâh, polytheists, pagans, idolaters) will not be successful.” Allah (may He be Praised) also says, “Verily, whosoever sets up partners (in worship) with Allâh, then Allâh has forbidden Paradise to him, and the Fire will be his abode.” In Surah Fatir, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) says, “Such is Allâh, your Lord; His is the kingdom. And those, whom you invoke or call upon instead of Him, own not even a Qitmîr (the thin membrane over the datestone). If you invoke (or call upon) them, they hear not your call; and if (in case) they were to hear, they could not grant it (your request) to you. And on the Day of Resurrection, they will disown your worshipping them. And none can inform you (O Muhammad (ﷺ)) like Him Who is the AllKnower (of everything).” Here, Allah (Exalted be He) names their call upon things other than Him as Shirk and in Surah AlMu’minun, Allah (Exalted be He) names it Kufr. In Surah AlTawbah, Allah (Glorified be He) says, “They (the disbelievers, the Jews and the Christians) want to extinguish Allâh’s Light (with which Muhammad (ﷺ) has been sent Islâmic Monotheism) with their mouths, but Allâh will not allow except that His Light should be perfected even though the Kâfirûn (disbelievers) hate (it). It is He Who has sent His Messenger (Muhammad (ﷺ) ) with guidance and the religion of truth (Islâm), to make it superior over all religions even though the Mushrikûn (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allâh) hate (it).” Here, Allah (Exalted be He) calls the disbelievers as Kuffar and Mushriks. This indicates that a Kafir may be called a Mushrik and vise versa. There are many Ayahs and Hadith that stress the same meaning. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Verily, between a man and Shirk and Kufr is the negligence of prayer.” (Related by Muslim in his Sahih (authentic) book of Hadith on the authority of Jabir Ibn Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with them). He (peace be upon him) also said, “The covenant that distinguishes between us and them (the hypocrites) is Salah. Anyone who abandons it is a Kafir.” (Related by Imam Ahmad, Abu Dawud, AlTirmidhy, AlNasa’y, and Ibn Majah with a Sahih chain of transmission on the authority of Buraydah ibn AlHasib, may Allah be pleased with him).May Allah grant us success! Sahl Ibn Abdillah At-Tustari (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Not everyone who performs acts of obedience becomes beloved to Allah; however the one who stays away from what Allah prohibited becomes beloved to Allah. & no one refrains from sins except the exceptionally truthful person who Allah has drawn close to him; as for actions of righteousness then they are done by (both) the righteous & the rebellious sinner.” [Sifatu-Safwa 2/272].

The Price of Loving One Another for the Sake of Allah The conversations of Shaykh al-Albānī رحمه الله with his students were remarkable and engaging. A questioner asked: “If a person loves someone for the sake of Allah, should he tell him, ‘I love you for the sake of Allah’?” Shaykh al-Albānī رحمه الله replied: “Yes. However, love for the sake of Allah has a very costly price, and very few people are willing to pay it. Do you know what the price of loving for the sake of Allah is? Does anyone among you know its price? Whoever knows, let him give us the answer.” One of those present said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘There are seven whom Allah will shade beneath His shade on the Day when there will be no shade except His…’ Among them are two men who loved one another for the sake of Allah, meeting upon that and parting upon that.” Shaykh al-Albānī رحمه الله said: “That statement is correct in itself, but it is not the answer to the question. This is approximately a description of love for the sake of Allah, though not a complete definition. My question is: What is the price that two people who love one another for the sake of Allah must pay to one another? I do not mean the reward in the Hereafter. What I mean by the question is: What is the practical proof of love for the sake of Allah between two people who love one another? Two men may love one another, but their love may merely be outward and superficial, rather than genuine. So what is the proof of true love?” One of those present said: “That he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.” Shaykh al-Albānī رحمه الله replied: “That is a characteristic of love, or one of its characteristics.” Another said: Allah, the Most High, said: “Say: If you truly love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you…” [Āl ʿImrān 3:31] Shaykh al-Albānī رحمه الله said: “That is a correct answer to another question.” Another person said: “Perhaps the answer is in the authentic ḥadīth: ‘There are three qualities which, if found in a person, he will taste the sweetness of faith…’ and among them is loving for the sake of Allah.” Shaykh al-Albānī رحمه الله replied: “That is an effect of love for the sake of Allah: a sweetness that he finds within his heart.” Then one of those present recited: “By Al-ʿAṣr. Verily, mankind is in loss, except those who believe and do righteous deeds, and recommend one another to the truth, and recommend one another to patience.” [Al-ʿAṣr 103:1–3] Shaykh al-Albānī رحمه الله said: “Excellent. This is the answer.” “The explanation of this is that if I truly love you for the sake of Allah, I will continually follow you with sincere advice, and you will likewise reciprocate this with me. This mutual giving of sincere advice is extremely rare among those who claim to love one another for the sake of Allah. Such love may contain a degree of sincerity, but it is not complete. This is because each one of us considers the feelings of the other: he fears upsetting him, fears that he may distance himself, and so on. Therefore, the price of love for the sake of Allah is that each of us be completely sincere toward the other through sincere advice. He commands him with what is good and forbids him from what is evil, continually and consistently. In advising him, he follows him more closely than his own shadow. For this reason, it has authentically been reported that it was from the practice of the Companions that, whenever they were about to part from one another, one of them would recite to the other: ‘By Al-ʿAṣr. Verily, mankind is in loss, except those who believe and do righteous deeds, and recommend one another to the truth, and recommend one another to patience.’” 📚Al-Ḥāwī min Fatāwā al-Albānī, pp. 165–166
