🔥 Love Of Dunya: The Mother Of All Sufferings
Part #7
7️⃣ The Real Cure For Depression, Anxiety Is In Following Islaam:
Despite their remarkable advances in medicine and technology, these countries and nations cannot offer the true and complete relief that a heart burdened with sorrow, anxiety, depression, and trauma seeks. By Allaah! No religion offers a comprehensive cure for al-Hazn (regret about the past), al-Hamm (anxiety about the future), and al-Ghamm (distress over the present) except Islaam. It is only Islaam that addresses not merely the symptoms, but the heart, the soul, and the true cause of human suffering.
In our religion, enduring grief and anxiety becomes an act of worship when a person believes in Allaah, remains patient, and hopes for reward from Allaah. Every moment of suffering that is borne with Faith and Patience is recorded as an act of obedience and draws the believer closer to Allaah.
The Prophet ﷺ said: ❝Never is a believer stricken with a discomfort, an illness, anxiety, grief, mental worry, or even the pricking of a thorn except that Allaah will expiate his sins (on account of his patience).❞ [1]
A person may only be pricked by a thorn a few times during his lifetime. Yet those who suffer from diabetes and must regularly inject themselves with insulin should rejoice in the glad tidings that, with every prick of the needle, some of their minor sins are expiated, or their ranks are elevated - provided they bear it patiently and hope for the reward from Allaah.
What others see as suffering, the believer transforms into worship. What others see as hardship, the believer turns into purification. This is the honor of patience, and this is the mercy of the Most Merciful.
The root of much of our sorrow and pain is that we seek the comfort of this worldly life. When the heart expects ease from a world created for toil, it inevitably breaks. At times, we become the cause of our own suffering and our own worst enemy - not because Allaah تعالى wronged us, but because we have failed to understand the true purpose of our existence.
We were not created to pursue perfect comfort in this world. Rather, we were created to worship Allaah alone during this temporary life, and in return, He تعالى will reward the Believers with everlasting comfort in the Hereafter.
The problem is that we desire in this world what Allaah تعالى has reserved for the people of Jannah. We long for an everlasting life, spacious homes, beautiful spouses, immense wealth, perpetual happiness, a life free from pain, grief, and sadness, and for everyone around us to love us, remain pleased with us, and never leave us.
But these are not the promises of this world—they are the promises of Jannah. This worldly life was created as a place of trial, whereas Jannah is the abode of perfect comfort and eternal delight. Yet man is hasty, as Allaah تعالى says:
﴿وَيَدْعُ الْإِنسَانُ بِالشَّرِّ دُعَاءَهُ بِالْخَيْرِ ۖ وَكَانَ الْإِنسَانُ عَجُولًا﴾
{And man supplicates for evil as he supplicates for good, and man is ever hasty.} [2]
And also:
{Man was created in haste. I (Allaah) will show you My signs, so do not impatiently urge Me.} [3]

6️⃣ The Worldly Life: A Deception of Enjoyment:
Many of those who publicly speak about joy and happiness in their lives - such as social media influencers, bloggers, and vloggers - present an image that is exaggerated and often far removed from reality. They carefully display moments of laughter and success while concealing their pain, anxiety, and sorrow behind the camera. Outwardly, they appear cheerful and fulfilled, but inwardly they may be empty and broken. They are like a piece of wood that appears strong and sound on the outside, yet has been hollowed out from within by termites. The outward appearance is attractive, but the inside is weak and decayed.
Various organizations publish rankings of the “happiest countries” or “best places to live.” Such rankings should be approached with caution. They are based on surveys, statistical models, and responses from a relatively small sample of people rather than from every individual in a nation. As a result, they cannot accurately reflect the condition, experiences, or happiness of every person living there. Moreover, most global happiness rankings do not measure the human soul; they measure selective, surface‑level indicators that can be easily manipulated.
A visit to many of these highly ranked countries reveals that they are not free from the very problems that afflict the rest of the world. They continue to struggle with alcohol and drug abuse, sexual immorality, suicide, violent crime, protests, social unrest, poverty, rising prices, an increasing cost of living, heavy taxation, racial prejudice, ethnic discrimination, and the oppression of vulnerable communities. Despite their economic strength, advanced infrastructure, beautiful landscapes, pleasant climates, luxurious homes, and modern conveniences, countless people still suffer from anxiety, loneliness, and depression.
Many turn to alcohol, recreational drugs - including marijuana - or other forms of escapism in an attempt to numb emotional pain and forget their sorrows. Yet these are only temporary escapes; they do not remove the root of the problem. When the intoxicating effects wear off, the pain often returns. In many cases, alcohol and drug abuse worsen depression, damage both the body and the mind, and can contribute to addiction, broken families, self-destructive behavior, and, for some, suicidal thoughts or other tragic consequences.
Studies often report that a certain percentage of the world’s population suffers from depression, trauma, or other mental health conditions. However, these figures do not necessarily reflect the full reality. They are based on those who have been identified through surveys, diagnosed by healthcare professionals, or who have sought medical help. But what about those who never visit a psychiatrist or counselor? What about those who have no access to mental health services? What about those who suffer in silence, or those who feel unable to speak because of stigma, fear, or social pressure?
The true number of those carrying emotional and psychological burdens may be far greater than what statistics can measure. Not every wound is visible, and not every person who suffers seeks help or receives a diagnosis.
Allaah تعالى already described the deception of this worldly life and the boasting about it in His saying:
{Know that worldly life is only play, and distraction, and adornment, and boasting among you, and competition in increase of wealth and children. It is like a rainfall that produces vegetation, and which delights the tillers. But then it withers, and you see it turning yellow, and then it becomes (scattered) debris. 5️⃣ Even Children Are Suffering From PTSD:
A growing number of people are experiencing depression, anxiety, and chronic stress. Alarmingly, children are also developing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after experiencing or witnessing deeply frightening, distressing, or prolonged traumatic events. PTSD can result from experiences such as serious accidents, physical or sexual assault, natural disasters, violence, or other life-threatening situations.
If left untreated, PTSD is unlikely to resolve on its own and can have long-term consequences. It may contribute to chronic pain, depression, substance misuse, sleep disturbances, and difficulty functioning at school, at home, and in social settings.
Al-Zubair Ibn `Adee narrated: We went to Anas Ibn Maalik رضي الله عنه and complained about the wrong we were suffering at the hand of al- Hajjaaj. Anas رضي الله عنه said: “ ❝Be patient till you meet your Lord, for no time will come upon you but the time following it will be worse than it.❞ I heard that from the Prophet ﷺ.”

4. The World Is A House Of Sorrow:
“All praise and thanks belong to Allaah, Who has removed from us all grief.” This is the statement that the people of Paradise will make after they enter Jannah. As for this worldly life, it is, in reality, an abode of sorrow and hardship.
We often forget that after Aadam عليه السلام was sent out of Jannah because of his disobedience to Allaah, he was sent down to the earth, where human life would be marked by toil, hardship, and only temporary enjoyment. This world was never meant to be a place of lasting comfort or permanent happiness.
Everything in this world is destined to perish. Whenever people gather, differences and divisions eventually arise. Whatever is brought together will one day be separated. Whatever is adorned will eventually lose its beauty. Whatever is kept clean will become soiled. Whatever is made beautiful will grow old and fade. Whatever is born will inevitably die.
This is the true reality of this world: it is temporary, imperfect, and ever-changing. Lasting peace, permanent happiness, and complete freedom from grief are found only in Jannah (Paradise).
Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said: ❝The world is a prison-house for a believer and Paradise for a non-believer❞ [1]
Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ saying: ❝This world is cursed and what is in it is cursed, except the remembrance of Allaah (Dhikr)…❞ [2]
Allah تعالى does not want our hearts to become so preoccupied with this worldly life that we neglect the Hereafter. We are nothing more than travelers in this world—arriving in the morning and departing by the evening. Our stay is brief, and our true destination lies beyond this life. Every step we take brings us closer to the Hereafter, where we will ultimately arrive at one of two eternal abodes: either the everlasting bliss of Jannah or the painful punishment of the Hellfire.

3️⃣ The Real Deception:
Do you know what the people of Jannah (Paradise) will say after they have entered it—after they have been adorned with gold and pearls, clothed in garments of silk, resting in cool shade, reclining on luxurious couches, surrounded by gardens beneath which rivers flow, with fruits hanging low and within easy reach? After receiving all of these unimaginable blessings, what will they say?
And they will say: “All the praises and thanks be to Allaah, Who has removed from us (all) sorrow. Verily, our Lord is indeed Oft-Forgiving, Most Ready to appreciate (good deeds and to recompense). He who, out of His Grace, has settled us in a home that will last forever. Therein neither fatigue will touch us nor will weariness afflict us in it.”
[Surah Faatir (35): 34-35]
True happiness can never be attained until everything that causes grief, sorrow, and distress is removed forever. That perfect and everlasting happiness will only be found in Jannah.
Notice they don’t say: “we are happy now.” Instead, they will say: “All praise is for Allaah alone, Who has removed from us all sorrow.” It means sorrow itself is erased from their nature. No memory that hurts. No fear of loss. No anxiety. Anyone seeking permanent comfort and everlasting happiness in this unstable world is only deceiving himself. The world was created as a testing ground, not a resting place.
The deception isn’t that Dunya offers comfort. The deception is that people believe the comfort will last. They think:
“Once I get this job, I’ll be at ease.”
“Once I marry, I’ll be at ease.”
“Once I buy this house, I’ll be at ease.”
“Once I fix this problem, I’ll be at ease.”
But every time they reach the next milestone, the heart quietly whispers: “This is not it.”
And they start chasing the next thing. This cycle continues until death interrupts it.

2️⃣ Luxuries And The Earlier Generations:
Compared to previous generations, the present generation enjoys a far more comfortable life. Many things that were once considered luxuries have now become ordinary necessities. In the past, only a few could afford cars and other vehicles, whereas today almost every household has some form of modern transportation, whether a car, truck, or motorbike. Distances that once required days or even weeks to travel can now be covered in a matter of hours.
Likewise, an average home today is equipped with conveniences such as a television, a gas or electric stove, a refrigerator, and a washing machine—items that were beyond the reach of many in earlier generations. The comforts and blessings available to this generation have multiplied many times over. People can wear fine clothes, live in comfortable homes, dine at restaurants, and travel across the world for leisure with relative ease.
Yet, despite this unprecedented level of comfort and material abundance, anxiety, distress, sorrow, and other emotional struggles have also become increasingly widespread.
Our forefathers did not witness the level of anxiety and emotional distress that has become so common in our generation. Ironically, as material comfort and luxury have increased, mental well-being has declined. Cases of anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders have risen at an alarming rate, reflecting a troubling contrast between outward prosperity and inner peace.
Despite lacking these modern luxuries, earlier generations lived better and more fulfilling lives. They lived a quality life. Their lives were enriched by the recitation of the Qur’aan, the morning and evening remembrances of Allaah, and constant Dhikr. Their tongues remained moist with the remembrance of Allaah, saying: Sub-haan Allaah, Alhamdulillaah, Laa ilaaha illallaah, and Allaahu Akbar. They regularly performed the night prayers (Tahajjud), observed the Dhuha prayer, and hastened to the Masaajid to offer the obligatory and Jumu`ah prayers.
In contrast, many people today have neglected even the obligatory prayers, let alone voluntary acts of worship such as the night prayer. At the same time, sins have become widespread, immorality and indecency have become commonplace, and disobedience to Allaah has become increasingly normalized. Despite unprecedented material prosperity, many hearts remain deprived of the peace, contentment, and spiritual fulfillment that characterized the lives of the earlier generations.
Earlier generations would hardly need a Raaqee (spiritual healer). But today, if someone claims to be a Raaqee, people will flock around him, waiting in long lines for their turn or booking appointments to meet him.
Almost everyone today complains of anxiety, tightness in the chest, and emotional distress. They worry about what “tomorrow” may bring, grieve over what “yesterday” has taken away, and the “today” is wasted between these two burdens. Life becomes suspended between future anxiety, past sorrow, and present grief - a constant struggle between what has not yet happened and what can no longer be changed.

1️⃣ The Past, The Present, And The Future:
Depression, tightness of the chest, restlessness, stress, anxiety, sorrow, distress, agitation, discomfort, fear, and similar psychological disturbances are all unpleasant visitors. These are not guests one can see; these are not guests that physically occupy space in the home. The problem with these guests is that they live in a person’s heart, dominate the mind, and influence decisions.
We often see people around us who appear to be living lives of bliss. They possess all the comforts and luxuries one could desire—a luxurious home, a fine car, a loving family, a stable income, and good health. Yet, despite these outward blessings, many are inwardly consumed by turmoil. Their hearts are burdened with distress, as though their chests are about to burst. Anxiety robs them of their peace and happiness, while depression isolates them, driving them away from others. Their external success conceals an inner struggle that no material possession can heal.
👉 Al-Hamm refers to the fear associated with future events. It is the anxiety that settles in the heart when one becomes consumed by thoughts of what tomorrow may hold and becoming preoccupied with uncertainties that have not yet occurred.
👉 Al‑Hazn refers to the pain a person carries because of a past event. It is the sorrow, grief, or distress that arises from losing someone or something dear, or from any experience that leaves a lasting emotional wound.
👉 Al Ghamm is the grief or distress a person feels about his current situation. It is the heaviness of the heart caused by what one is facing right now, the pressure of present worries, burdens, and difficulties.
A person looks toward the future, and anxiety grips him; he looks back at the past, and sorrow overwhelms him; and the present — the only moment he truly possesses — is lost between these two forces. So when will he taste relief and comfort? How can he enjoy and appreciate the present when his heart is suspended between the regrets of yesterday and the fears of tomorrow?

| 10 | Praising Allaah after having food:
The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said: ❝Whoever eats food and then says:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنِي هَذَا وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلاَ قُوَّةٍ
(Al-ḥamdulillaah, alladhee aṭ`amanee haadha wa razaqaneehi min ghairi ḥawlin minnee, wa laa quwwah)
“All praise is to Allaah who has fed me this and granted it as provision to me, without any effort from me nor power (on my part)”, his past sins shall be forgiven.❞

| 11 | The Day Of Judgment Will Be A Cause Of Grief For Those Who Wasted Their Time:
Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: ❝Those people who get up from a gathering in which they did not remember Allaah will be just as if they had got up from (a gathering) similar to that of the carcass of a donkey, and it will be a cause of grief to them.❞ 1️⃣
Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: ❝No people sit together in a gathering and then disperse, without remembering Allaah, except that they dispersed from (a gathering) similar to that of the carcass of a donkey, and this gathering of theirs will be a cause of grief to them on the Day of Resurrection.❞ 2️⃣
On the Day of Resurrection, everyone who neglected to remember Allaah and squandered their time will regret it. That will be a Day of loss for them due to missed opportunities, even if they eventually enter Paradise.
The deprivation experienced on that Day will manifest in the following ways:
(a) Regret Over Missed Good Deeds: Believers will recognize the vast and often unimaginable rewards granted for even simple righteous actions on Earth. This realization will evoke a deep sense of regret, as they wish they had dedicated every free moment to prayers, charity, or Dhikr to attain an even greater status in Paradise.
(b) Loss of Higher Paradise Degrees: Paradise consists of many vast, ascending levels. A Believer on a lower level will look at those in the highest levels (like Al-Firdous) and understand they are forever barred from that closer level of nearness to Allaah and the Prophets, because of their worldly laziness and negligence.
(c) Wasted Time: Believers will feel they have lost valuable time on Earth spent on trivial matters that offered no spiritual benefit, seeing it as a permanent loss of eternal treasure.

Al-Raazee mentioned in his Tafseer: It has been reported that someone from the Salaf said: ❝I learned the meaning of the Surah from an ice-seller. He was calling out in a loud voice (pleading with people), saying: “Have mercy on the one whose capital is melting away! Have mercy on the one whose capital is melting away!”
I said (to myself): “This is the meaning of the saying of Allaah تعالى:
إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ
Verily! Man is in loss
📚 [Surah al-`Asr (103): 2]
Time passes by for a person; his life goes on, he gains nothing, therefore, making him a loser.”❞
📚 [Tafseer al-Raazee (32/278)]
Shaikh Muhammad al-Ameen al-Shiqeetee said in his Tafseer: “And in the Hadeeth narrated by Muslim in his Saheeh that the Prophet ﷺ said: ❝All men go out early in the morning and sell themselves, either setting themselves free or destroying themselves.❞ This confirms that a person's capital is his lifespan.”
📚 [al-Adhwaa al-Bayaan (9/91)]
The merchant knew that if he didn’t sell his ice before sunset, he wouldn’t just lose profit; he would have nothing left but a puddle of water.
Ice is frozen water. Every drop that melts away will not return. Our capital in this world is our “lifespan”. Every moment of our lives that passes by will not return. We aren’t just losing profit; we’re losing our very existence.
Soon, the sun of our lives will set!
Soon, the light of our lives will extinguish!
Soon, the book of our lives will close!
The very next moment can be our last!
The Prophet ﷺ said: ❝There are two blessings which many people lose: (they are) Good Health and Free Time (for doing good deeds).❞
📚 [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (6412)]
Alee ibn Abee Taalib رضي الله عنه used to say: ❝Certainly this life has begun traveling away, and the Hereafter has begun traveling forward, and each has its children. So be from the children of the Hereafter, and don’t be from the children of this life. For indeed today there is action with no account, and tomorrow there will be account with no action.❞ [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree] | 734 |
| 17 | 👉 The shortest distance between a problem and its solution is the distance between your knees and the floor. The one who kneels to Allaah can stand up to anything…
{And seek (Allaah’s) help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is hard (to be patient and punctual in offering Salaah) except for those who fear (Allaah). (They are those) who are certain that they are going to meet their Lord, and that unto Him they are going to return.}
📚 [Surah al-Baqarah (2): 45-46]
“O you who Believe! Seek (Allaah’s) help with patient perseverance and prayer: for Allaah is with those who patiently persevere.”
📚 [Surah al-Baqarah (2): 153] | 373 |
| 18 | 🔥Fear the sins, for sometimes what you have been promised is so close and within your grasp, but because of your disobedience to Allaah it is delayed from you.
Allaah تعالى provided the Children of Israaeel with the Blessed land, and asked them to enter it and not to turn back from fighting in Allaah's cause, but they replied back to Moosaa عليه السلام saying:
{They said: "O Moosaa, indeed we will not enter it, ever, as long as they (the other people) are within it; so go, you and your Lord, and fight. Indeed, we are remaining right here." [Moosaa عليه السلام] said: "My Lord, indeed I do not possess except myself and my brother, so part us from the defiantly disobedient people." [Allaah] said: "Then indeed, it is forbidden to them for forty years [in which] they will wander throughout the land. So do not grieve over the defiantly disobedient people."}
📚[Surah al-Maaidah (5): 24-26]
So, they were denied from the land they were promised for forty years because of their disobedience to Allaah. | 382 |
| 19 | The Test of "Fear"
Fear plays such an important role in everyone's life - fear of hunger, fear of poverty, fear of losing wealth, fear of failing in exams, fear of death, fear of losing someone or something, and the list goes on - no wonder that the first thing Allaah mentioned with which He will test us is FEAR.
Allaah تعالى says: {And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to As-Saabirûn (the patient).} [Surah Al-Baqarah (2): 155]
And the antidote for every type of fear is Tawheed (worship of Allaah alone). Security is only possible when the commandments of Allaah are obeyed.
Allaah تعالى says: {It is those who believe (in the Oneness of Allaah and worship none but Him Alone) and confuse not their Belief with Zulm (wrong, i.e. by worshipping others besides Allaah), for them (only) there is SECURITY and they are the guided.} [Surah al-An`aam (6): 82]
He تعالى also says: {Allaah has promised those among you who believe and do righteous good deeds, that He will certainly grant them succession to (the present rulers) in the land, as He granted it to those before them, and that He will grant them the authority to practice their religion which He has chosen for them (i.e. Islaam). And He will surely give them in exchange a SAFE SECURITY after their FEAR (provided) they (believers) worship Me and do not associate anything (in worship) with Me. But whoever disbelieved after this, they are the Faasiqoon (rebellious, disobedient to Allaah).} [Surah al-Noor 24): 55] | 726 |
