Indeed, St. Patrick himself lamented being taken “among foreigners” (inter alienigenas), contrasting them with his own gens (gentibus), his kinfolk / nation. He clearly saw a nation not just as land, but as a family — a people bound by blood, heritage, and a unique duty / preference of love and loyalty for one another before others.
