It ought not be a deterrent to us that our prayers are less than fervent. We must not forget that our heavenly Father is not a cruel tyrant who is never satisfied with anything but perfection in us and who will quickly be critical of us in our weaknesses and sins. He always looks at us in Christ, in whom our prayers are perfected. And in Christ he is slow to anger and plenteous in mercy. He does not always chide... When we persist in the use of the means, whether we feel like it or not, he will return again to us in his favor and restore to us the joy of his salvation. If we waited to pray until we felt like it, we would never pray, and we would be disobedient to God by despising the means of spiritual blessings. Indeed, there are many times when we simply pray for the grace to pray. -Herman Hanko @Presbyterianism

Rome is a Global South NGO with a legacy religious infrastructure. Christianity to them is like landline phone service in the telecoms industry. Rome is not a serious faith that expects people to believe things to participate. Look what Rome does and what the living leaders say, not the wishful thinking of online converts. @Presbyterianism

Against Veneration For to prostrate one-self before the bread of the Supper, and to adore Jesus Christ in it as though he were there contained, is to make an idol displace the sacrament. We have no commandment to adore, but to take and eat. This, then, ought not to have been audaciously attempted. Moreover, the practice always observed in the ancient Church was that, before celebrating the Supper, the people were solemnly exhorted to lift their hearts on high, to show that we must not stop at the visible sign, to adore Jesus Christ rightly. But there is no need to battle at length over this point, when the presence and conjunction of reality and sign, of which we have spoken and shall again speak, is well understood. From the same source proceeded other superstitious practices, such as carrying the sacrament in procession through the streets once a year, making another day a tabernacle for it, and all the year round keeping it in a cupboard to amuse the people, as if it were a god. Because all this has not only been contrived without the Word of God, but also is directly contrary to the institution of the Supper, it ought to be rejected by all Christians. -Calvin

What is [the extra Calvinisticum]? The extra is the view that, in the incarnation, the Son not only retained his divine attributes but also continued to exercise them in Trinitarian relation. It also insists that, since the Son now subsists in two natures, he is not completely circumscribed by the limits of his human nature; the Son is able to live a divine life outside (extra) his human nature while simultaneously living a fully human life in his human nature. From the moment of conception, the Son humbled himself. In so doing, he did not override the limitations of his human nature. The Son, in his human nature, lived like we do and accepted the limitations of that nature as our representative, covenant head, and mediator. Yet, in order to account for the incarnate Son’s continual, cosmic exercise of his divine attributes (e.g., Col. 1:17), the church insisted that the Son’s exercise of his deity is “outside” his human nature and life. Thus, from conception onward, the Son lived his life totus in carne et totus extra carne, that is, totally in the flesh and totally outside or apart from the flesh. Stephen J. Wellum, God the Son Incarnate. Crossway. 2016.

Lord’s Day 27 72. Q. Is, then, the outward washing with water itself the washing away of sin? A. No, for only the blood of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit cleanse us from all sins. 73. Q. Why, then, does the Holy Spirit call baptism the washing of regeneration and the washing away of sins? A. God speaks thus not without great cause: to wit, not only to teach us thereby that as the filthiness of the body is taken away by water, so our sins are removed by the blood and Spirit of Jesus Christ; but especially to assure us by this divine pledge and sign that we are spiritually cleansed from our sins as really as we are outwardly washed with water. 74. Q. Are infants also to be baptized? A. Yes; for since they, as well as adults, are included in the covenant and Church of God, and since both redemption from sin and the Holy Spirit, the Author of faith, are through the blood of Christ promised to them no less than to adults, they must also by baptism, as a sign of the covenant, be ingrafted into the Christian Church, and distinguished from the children of unbelievers, as was done in the old covenant or testament by circumcision, instead of which baptism was instituted in the new covenant. @Presbyterianism

Silicon Sunday School: The Lord's Supper The Eucharist is is a promise from God, sealed in physical form. It does three things at once: - It confirms your faith (this promise is for you). - It unites the body of Christ (we eat as one). - It is a visible gospel enacted at the table, not just recited from the pulpit. Don't confusing the meaning of baptism and communion. One is entrance, the other is confirmation and ongoing nourishment. (Quotes in the video are from Ursinus. on LD 27.) @Presbyterianism

And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. Exodus 12:13 Truly, the mystery of our redemption by our Lord Jesus Christ is manifestly contained in the first precept of the Ten Commandments. For it is evident, that the Israelites' free departure out of Egypt was a type or figure of the delivery of the whole compass of the earth, and of all the kingdoms of the world, which would be wrought by Christ our Lord, who has now already set the whole world free from the bondage of sin and hell. But if any man doubts this, let him diligently consider with himself the meaning of the ceremony and sacrament of that bodily deliverance, I mean, the Passover. For who does not know that the paschal lamb represented Christ our Redeemer in a figure? Are Paul's words unknown, who says, "Christ our Passover is offered up?" (1 Cor 5.7) Have not all the apostles and John the Baptist called our Lord "the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world?" -Bullinger @Presbyterianism

There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy. James 4:12a Some indeed would have us to show modesty, when we call the Pope antichrist, who exercises tyranny over the souls of men, making himself a lawgiver equal to God. But we learn from this passage something far more, even that they are the members of Antichrist, who willingly submit to be thus ensnared, and that they thus renounce Christ, when they connect themselves with a man that is not only a mortal, but who also extols himself against him. It is, I say, a prevaricating obedience, rendered to the devil, when we allow any other than God himself to be a lawgiver to rule our souls. -Calvin @Presbyterianism

The Danger of An Unconverted Ministry A lot of outwardly devout people are cynical or see the church as a safe space for their private agendas. Too often men lose their faith between applying to seminary and today. Or they fool people for spiritual status. Generations ago, unconverted ministry was seen as a serious problem. The concept has be abused, yet the problem is real. Today we are not allowed to mention the subject. Yet you know this is the norm in the PC(USA) and ELCA today. x.gd/1b0eO @Presbyterianiam

Actual PCA service in Boca Raton. A knockoff of what Calvary Chapel did 50 years ago to impress hippies. This style is the liturgical tradition of the Baby Boom. Making fun of it is too easy. Can’t you see you’re not making Christianity any better, you’re just making rock and roll worse? To be fair, this is no more offensive than what Anglo-Catholics and High Lutherans do. The two sides of the worship wars cancel each other out. For by His law it pleases Him to prescribe for men what is good and right, and thus to hold them to a sure standard that no one may take leave to contrive any sort of worship He pleases. -Calvin

Essay Question: Sanctification Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 1 Cor 5:17 Jeffrey Dahlmer, the Milwaukee Cannibal, converted to Campbellism (Churches of Christ) in prison. He was baptized in 1994. Did he face greater difficulty in sanctification based on his circumstances? Or is the process of sanctification universal for all believers, regardless of condition or compulsion? What principles from revelation or nature apply? @Presbyterianism

On Richard Baxter Oft in the church arise destructive schisms From anti-evangelic aphorisms; A legal spirit may be justly nam’d The fertile womb of ev’ry error damn’d. Hence Pop’ry, so connat’ral since the fall, Makes legal works like saviours merit all; Yea, more than merit on their shoulder loads, To supererogate like demi-gods. Hence dare Arminians too, with brazen face, Give man’s free-will the throne of God’s free grace; Whose self-exalting tenets clearly shew Great ignorance of law and gospel too. Hence Neonomians spring, as sundry call The new law-makers, to redress our fall. The law of works into repentance, faith, Is chang’d, as their Baxterian Bible saith. Shaping the gospel to an easy law, They build their tott’ring house with hay and straw; Yet hide, like Rachel’s idols in the stuff, Their legal hands within a gospel-muff. From Ralph Erskine's Gospel Sonnets. @Presbyterianism
