“We are disappointed that the government has allowed loopholes in the ABSD to be left open and exploited by some rich buyers of properties for so long” - NCMP Leong Mun Wai 🔗: https://psp.org.sg/speech-on-the-stamp-duty-amendment-bill/

By PSP Sec-Gen Francis Yuen: PUTTING OUT THE FIRE… The Times reported on Thursday that Britain had proposed a cut in value-added tax, or VAT to help households cope with the rising cost of living. Other countries such as Australia and New Zealand have taken similar measures to cut energy taxes as they spill over and inflate the cost of essential goods and services. Some would argue that their situation may be different and that we need additional revenue to fund health and elder care programs. But the current soaring inflation and the fast-rising cost of living should not be worsened by a GST hike. It just does not make sense! The recent announcement of the $1.5b relief package is a move in the right direction, but more needs to be done to rein in unnecessary spending and wastages to free up funds. Cutting excessive expenditure rather than increasing tax revenue to balance the budget makes better sense. Now is hardly the time to take a wait-and-see or incremental approach to forestall the inevitable hardship caused by a high cost of living. The morally right thing to do is to cancel the planned GST hike. Singaporeans deserve better! 🔗: https://www.facebook.com/100058193554248/posts/pfbid0ytYFFVJYatyvyhDz93Hx6U818mHPyN1LbwGUapMZw8bT2spGSVxMqZqSjZniBw9fl 📹: https://www.tiktok.com/@progresssingaporeparty/video/7115996506301140226

In his Parliament speech today, NCMP Leong Mun Wai said that PSP cannot support the FICA bill in its current form “because of the insufficient evaluation by both Parliamentarians and members of the public of its far-reaching implications”. In the midst of a pandemic, the Government intends to move a new bill — the Foreign Interference Countermeasures Act — which includes sweeping powers given to ministers and vague definitions. “While the title of the bill maybe simple, the intention must be clear. Is it to really prevent foreign interference? Or is it a means to stifle freedom of expression, alternative views and political discourse in the name of foreign interference. Unless the bill gets a thorough public hearing, it is irresponsible of the government to push it through hastily over 3 weeks.” Dr Tan Cheng Bock issues a word of caution over the hastiness of this new bill: https://youtu.be/mhDGd4YrXHo #PSPSG #ProgressSingaporeParty

<𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭> "I received a call from minister Vivian today and he has conveyed his apology and what was said on a hot mike. I accepted his apology. Let’s put our time to better use for Singapore and Singaporeans. Though I am also curious to know who are the other persons who were involved in the conversation and the reason why they held the institution that I attended in contempt, we must focus on the task at hand: improving the jobs and livelihoods of our people. This is what the people entrusted us to do. Please read our reasons for starting this debate, as mentioned by PSP Secretary-General Francis Yuen: https://psp.org.sg/jobs-and-livelihoods-debate-statement-by-francis" - NCMP Leong Mun Wai #PSPSG #ProgressSingaporeParty #PSPJobsDebate
