By PSP Sec-Gen Francis Yuen: PUTTING OUT THE FIRE… The Times reported on Thursday that Britain had proposed a cut in value-added tax, or VAT to help households cope with the rising cost of living. Other countries such as Australia and New Zealand have taken similar measures to cut energy taxes as they spill over and inflate the cost of essential goods and services. Some would argue that their situation may be different and that we need additional revenue to fund health and elder care programs. But the current soaring inflation and the fast-rising cost of living should not be worsened by a GST hike. It just does not make sense! The recent announcement of the $1.5b relief package is a move in the right direction, but more needs to be done to rein in unnecessary spending and wastages to free up funds. Cutting excessive expenditure rather than increasing tax revenue to balance the budget makes better sense. Now is hardly the time to take a wait-and-see or incremental approach to forestall the inevitable hardship caused by a high cost of living. The morally right thing to do is to cancel the planned GST hike. In the midst of a pandemic, the Government intends to move a new bill — the Foreign Interference Countermeasures Act — which includes sweeping powers given to ministers and vague definitions. “While the title of the bill maybe simple, the intention must be clear. Is it to really prevent foreign interference? Or is it a means to stifle freedom of expression, alternative views and political discourse in the name of foreign interference.
