This is one of Gujarat’s oldest and finest crafts. The art form uses different patches of fabric in various colours and patterns that are placed together to create a multicoloured fabric much like a jigsaw puzzle. The work is used to create attractive, vibrant quilts, wall hangings, linen and clothing. The craft is popular in the Saurashtra, Banaskantha, Patan and Kutch regions of Gujarat.

| 13 | Patan Patola Heritage Museum
Run by the multiple-award-winning Salvi family, this purpose-built museum is an excellent place to see Patola silk weaving in action. The family has specialised in double-ikat weaving (a process that their ancestors brought from Southeast Asia) since the 11th century. You can observe a demonstration on the loom and compare the family’s craft with beautifully displayed single-ikat textiles from around the world, from Uzbekistan and northern Thailand to Holland.
Brief History: The art of double ikat goes back centuries and is also seen in some of the cave paintings in Ajanta. Legends say that it was in 12 century AD that King Kumarpal of the Solanki dynasty, invited 700 families of patola weavers from Jalna (South Maharashtra) to settle down in Patan in North Gujarat. The Salvi family is one of them. They have continued to preserve this art for the last 35 generations.

| 14 | Champaner & Pavagadh Archaeological Park, Panchmahal
A UNESCO Heritage site, Champaner and Pavagadh are often clubbed together as one of the most engaging historical attractions of Gujarat. Pavagadh stands on top of the hill that looks over the sprawl of monuments at the base in Champaner. The duo makes a rich heritage site dotted with forts, mosques, monuments, tombs, arches, temples, step-wells and fortresses from 8th to 14th century. Today, throngs of pilgrims ascend Pavagadh to worship at the important Kalikamata Temple, dedicated to the goddess Kali, who sits atop the summit. Champaner is the only unchanged Islamic-Mughal city over the centuries, offering an authentic flavour of architecture of the era. Juxtaposed to this is the Kalika Mata Temple on the Pavagadh Hill, where thousands congregate during Navratris.

| 15 | Willingdon Crescent
This European-style arcaded crescent was built by Jam Ranjitsinhji to replace Jamnagar’s worst slum. It now houses an assortment of shops and is commonly known as Darbargadh, after the now-empty royal residence across the street.
Brief History: Jam Ranjitsinhji’s idea of giving the city of Jamnagar a facelift included getting rid of the slum areas. One such place that came under the scanner was the former location of where the Willingdon Crescent now stands. It stands opposite the 16th century palace of the city.

| 17 | Tera Village, Kutch
Tera is a heritage village located in the remote Abdasa taluka of Kutch. The village has a history of over five hundred years old.
One enters Tera through a large square – the main hub for meeting and chatting with the villagers. Besides the square, you will see a century-old banyan tree with seating arrangement and an Ashoka Stambh with stone railing. Behind the stone wall lies an imposing fort wall with strategically built gates. Once a Rajwadu village, Tera has been home to diverse communities – Bhanushali, Koli, Harijan, Parghi, Muslim, Jain, Luhana, Rajput, and Brahmin. Some of these are known for entrepreneurial activities. Though farming is the main occupation of the village, the craft of bandhani (tie–and–dye) is also a major form of livelihood for many families.
Tera is located near the Nalia grassland, a fragile eco zone near the Gulf of Kutch, and is the habitat for the highly endangered bird species – the Great Indian Bustard. The nearby throne forest also harbours animals such as chinkara, chital, nilgai, jackal, wolf and hyena. Tera is also an important pilgrimage place for Hindus, Jains and Muslims.

| 18 | Sadeli
Sadeli is said to have come to Gujarat through the Parsis from Iran. The craft bears close similarities to the Persian form of marquetry called ‘Khatam’. Sadeli is a highly skilled technique where the craftsmen, in this case carpenters, fabricate intricate geometric or floral patterns on teak or other locally available wood. The elaborate designs add a charming aesthetic to doors, windows, cupboards, and bedposts. In fact, the famous Bombay Box--a tourist favourite--is actually a Sadeli handicraft from Gujarat. More recently, the craft of Sadeli is used to make sofa sets, book racks and lamp holders.

| 19 | Vikram Sarabhai Space Exhibition Center, Ahmedabad
The kid-friendly exhibition centre in Ahmedabad is the vision of scientist and astronomer Vikram Sarabhai.
