Why do those in the Charismatic world continue to equate a celebrity death or cultural event as prophetic for the church or nation? Why is there an insistence that certain cultural moments become a prophetic code that needs to be deciphered? This is not practicing New Testament prophecy. We are creating a Christianized form of omen interpretation. At worst, it's borderline divination (observing events and attempting to extract hidden supernatural information from them). With Dolly Parton's passing, I am already seeing attempts to assign prophetic significance to her death. And yes, I believe the Holy Spirit still speaks. I believe the Church should earnestly desire spiritual gifts. I believe prophecy must be protected from speculation masquerading as revelation. Dolly Parton’s death does not mean Joseph’s coat has fallen on the Church. It does not announce a coming revival, judgment on America, a new sound coming to Appalachia, or signify a prophetic mantle changing hands or establish a new spiritual season. NT prophecy is meant to bear witness to Jesus His person, His kingdom, His finished work, His present reign, and His coming glory and to mature the saints towards the beatific vision. NT prophecy is Christological. The goal is not becoming more skilled at decoding mysterious signs. It is becoming increasingly conformed to Christ as we behold Him. When a person dies, there are family members, friends, colleagues, and countless people grieving the loss. The Christian response should not be to immediately turn someone’s death into prophetic material. There is a time to mourn, a time to comfort, and a time to simply be present with those who are grieving. Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. There ARE encouraging signs: young men are showing renewed interest in faith, Bible sales have surged, secularization appears to have slowed, and millions of Americans are becoming more curious about Scripture. But according to longtime behavioral researcher Arnie Cole, the actual data tells a much more sobering story. Christian identification has stabilized around 62% after years of decline, but weekly church attendance, prayer, Scripture engagement, discipleship, and other measures of Christian practice have not shown the kind of sustained national increase we would expect from genuine revival. Perhaps one of the most concerning statistics is this: while roughly 70% of Americans surveyed affirmed that Jesus died for our sins and 64% affirmed the resurrection, only about 35% reported reading the Bible weekly.
