Today, we want to recognize and celebrate an important milestone of leadership, service, and professionalism within our dental community. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Ermias B. Mihret for the impactful work reflected in his project, “Healthy Smiles.”🦷🌍
Dr. Ermias’ initiative goes beyond clinical dentistry—it addresses oral health as a public health and social equity issue. As your project emphasizes, oral diseases are largely preventable, yet they continue to affect nearly 3.5 billion people worldwide, and remain a major challenge in Addis Ababa, disproportionately impacting underserved, low-income communities.
What makes “Healthy Smiles” especially valuable is the way it considers the real-world factors shaping oral health outcomes—such as:
- limited oral health awareness,
- poverty-related risk behaviors,
- restricted access to care, and
- widening inequalities.
A community-based approach with a clear purpose
Dr. Ermias developed this community-oriented project to assess socioeconomic factors and implement targeted interventions through Mother Theresa Missionaries of Charity—a humanitarian, faith-based center that provides health care services, shelter, education, and dignity to underserved populations.
His work highlights a model of dentistry that includes both treatment and prevention, with a strong commitment to understanding and responding to patients’ needs in a structured way. According to the PDF, the project included:
✅ Identifying key socioeconomic determinants affecting oral health access
✅ Assessing Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) using a cross-sectional approach and a structured questionnaire
✅ Providing free dental care to patients in need
✅ Delivering oral health education
✅ Distributing essential oral hygiene materials (toothbrushes and toothpaste)
✅ Patient examinations and treatment by clinicians, supporting the community with both expertise and compassion

This is exactly the kind of leadership we need—dentistry that is not only measured by clinical procedures, but also by impact, education, equity, and service.
Dr. Ermias’ project reminds us that improving oral health outcomes requires more than dental chairs. It requires:

📌 listening to patients—understanding their knowledge, attitudes, and daily practices.
