BEFORE SLEEPING KNOW THIS… For more than a decade, Pradeep Sangwan has walked through the Himalayas, collecting waste left behind by trekkers and pilgrims....bottles, plastic and food leftovers But he realised something: cleaning garbage AFTER pilgrims leave only treats the symptom. So he asked a different question. WHY NOT MAKE EVERY PILGRIM PART OF THE SOLUTION? His #CarryMeBack campaign asks KEDARNATH pilgrims to carry at least 1 KG OF WASTE BACK WITH THEM. Within 10 days, travellers had already brought back more than 1,000 kg of waste. By the end of the season, more than 100 tonnes of waste is expected to come back from the mountains.

BEFORE SLEEPING, KNOW THIS… At 12, vegetable vendor from Nagapattinam, Rajinikanth had dropped out of school du to poverty. In 2021, when he visited his old school, he saw children eating their midday meals inside cramped classrooms. The sight stayed with him. He decided to do something. Despite being a school dropout, he built an Unavu Koodam .... a dining hall for the children, giving them a proper place to eat and allowing classrooms to remain classrooms. During the 2004 tsunami, Rajnikanth & his family emptied their grocery shop to provide relief and opened their terrace to survivors for 52 days. During Cyclone Gaja, he distributed nearly 12 tonnes of vegetables to affected villages and relief shelters.

BEFORE SLEEPING KNOW THIS… In July 2015, 16-year-old Prakash was riding through Mumbai when his cousin’s bike hit a pothole. He was thrown off the bike and died. His father, Dadarao Bilhore, a vegetable vendor, was devastated. But within a month, he picked up a shovel and began filling the very pothole that had taken his son’s life. Then he filled another. And another. He collected sand and gravel from construction sites and kept working through Mumbai’s monsoon. Over the years, Dadarao has filled more than 1,500 potholes across Mumbai.

BEFORE SLEEPING, KNOW THIS… In a government school in Kesaratti village, Raichur, teacher Veeresh Teradal decided learning should not stop when children leave the classroom. He created ‘Akshara Van’ — a learning space where 48 stone slabs carry lessons instead of sitting empty. But there is more. Kannada alphabets appear alongside animals, fruits and vegetables. Traffic signs teach road safety. Walls carry textbook topics, while slabs feature verses of saints, poets, thoughts of great personalities and even fundamental rights. The challenge was making children from poor and disadvantaged families enjoy coming to school and learn beyond textbooks as they can learn by just walking around !

BEFORE SLEEPING, KNOW THIS… In Hazaribagh, one man has been collecting something most people throw away — fruit pits. Professor Rajendra Yadav collects discarded fruits, dries the seeds and plants them in places where they have a chance to survive. But keeping those tiny saplings alive was the real struggle. Stray cattle and goats would often destroy them. So he began planting the seeds inside thorny bushes and protected areas where animals could not easily reach them. Since 2020, Yadav says he has sown more than one lakh seeds & those tiny seeds are now standing tall as trees.

BEFORE SLEEPING KNOW THIS… 17-year-old Janmoni Konwar’s family in Assam lost their home to floods. Their fishery was damaged, ducks and poultry were swept away, and the family was forced to live under a tarpaulin. Janmoni had started training at five, sometimes practised on the streets, and her family even sold two buffaloes to support her competitions. But sadly, the fishery meant to fund her Delhi trip was destroyed. Then help arrived. Alakh Pandey, founder of Physics Wallah, learnt about Janmoni’s situation during his visit to flood-affected Assam. He stepped in to arrange her team’s travel to Delhi and back, accommodation, and gave ₹3 lakh to her family. Minister Pabitra Margherita also provided ₹10,000. She entered the competition. in Delhi and yes...she returned with National Gold in Ashihara Karate. Her home was still a tarpaulin shelter when she returned. But around her neck was a gold medal. She stepped onto the mat !!
