Yesterday, the KOSPI witnessed a sharp decline, largely driven by concerns over South Korea's proposed taxation policies. Yet, whenever our government discusses tax reforms, we are quick to criticize from every direction. Ironically, in India, barely 3% of the population pays income tax. In South Korea, however, policymakers are now considering taxing notional (unrealized) gains because investors are sitting on massive mark-to-market profits generated by the AI-driven market rally. The lesson is simple: taxation debates are not unique to India. Governments across the world are constantly searching for ways to increase revenue, especially when asset prices surge. Before blaming our own system, it helps to look at the bigger global picture. Ab bolo! 😉

Some brokers have offered access to U.S. equities for years through platforms such as Angel One and Prabhudas Lilladher. Yet suddenly, a massive marketing push is underway around investing in U.S. stocks through GIFT City. Investors should remember that when a financial product is aggressively promoted, it is worth asking: Why now? There is a possibility that a fresh wave of retail money could enter U.S. markets after a prolonged bull run, providing additional liquidity for larger participants looking to reduce exposure. History shows that late-stage liquidity often comes from enthusiastic retail investors. A similar phenomenon has been visible in India over the past few years, where strong domestic mutual fund inflows have absorbed the selling pressure of FPIs and FIIs. The lesson is simple: don't invest because access has become easier. Invest because valuations, fundamentals, and risk-reward justify the opportunity. Markets reward discipline, not marketing narratives.
