For a long time, many of us were taught that forgiving someone meant letting them off the hook, forgetting what happened, or somehow saying the pain was acceptable. But forgiveness is not approval. It is not pretending the wound never happened. It is deciding that what happened will no longer be allowed to live inside you rent-free. Pain becomes heavy when we carry it too long. Resentment keeps us connected to the very thing we are trying to escape. Anger can feel powerful for a while, but eventually it becomes another chain. Forgiveness is where we begin taking our energy back. You can forgive someone and still have boundaries. You can forgive and never return to the relationship. You can forgive and still remember exactly what the experience taught you. Forgiveness does not require reconciliation. Sometimes forgiveness simply means saying, “I will no longer carry this with me.” And it rarely happens all at once. Sometimes forgiveness comes in layers. You release a little, heal a little, understand a little more, and then one day you realize the memory no longer has the same grip on your heart. That is freedom. We cannot always change what happened to us, but we can decide how long it gets to control the life ahead of us. Forgive when you are ready. Not because what they did was right. Not because they earned access to you again. Forgive because your soul deserves to travel lighter. Forgive because your heart deserves peace.
