Jesus answered, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God’” Third Temptation: The temptation of power and glory Finally, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. He said, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” This was a temptation to gain worldly power and glory by compromising with evil. Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Begone, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve’” After this, the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Jesus, In other words from this account, Jesus overcame the devil not by His own divine power, but by His obedience to God’s Word, His humility, and His complete trust in God. He became an example for all Christians that victory over temptation is possible through knowledge of Scripture and dependence on God. (4b) (i)The Power of Scripture: Jesus demonstrated that knowing and applying the Word of God is the primary weapon against spiritual challenges and temptation. (ii)Importance of Self-Discipline: The period of fasting shows that spiritual strength and fasting/prayer prepare a believer to resist physical and worldly desires. The food gave him strength to journey to Mount Horeb. At Horeb, Elijah was discouraged and said he alone was left. God spoke to him in a still small voice and reassured him. God told him that 7,000 in Israel had not bowed to Baal and instructed him to anoint Elisha as his successor.
