I've been thinking about this recently and wanted to get some opinions.
For context, I am 24 and invest in broad-market ETFs (mainly S&P 500) through my brokerage, but I also have an investment-linked plan that I treat purely as my retirement portfolio.
About 80k in ETFs and about 40k in ILPs to date
I know Reddit generally prefers "just buy ETFs", and honestly I agree that they're a great investment vehicle. I don't think an ILP is automatically better than buying ETFs yourself.
My reasoning is more about behaviour than returns.
The money in my brokerage account is technically long-term, but realistically, I know I'll probably tap into it for major milestones over the next 10–20 years, things like a house, renovation, wedding, or even if I decide to start a business. Those are all legitimate reasons to sell investments.
The problem is that if I keep using the same portfolio for every life milestone, then it isn't really a retirement portfolio anymore. I'm effectively restarting the compounding process every time I withdraw a large amount.
So I decided to separate my investments into two buckets:
Brokerage ETFs → Medium/long-term goals with flexibility and liquidity.
Retirement portfolio (ILP) → Money I mentally don't intend to touch until retirement.
For me, that separation makes it much easier psychologically. I don't even consider my retirement bucket when planning for big purchases, so I'm less tempted to interrupt decades of compounding.
I know some people have enough discipline to keep everything in ETFs and simply never touch them until retirement. That's probably the lowest-cost approach.
I'm just wondering if anyone else intentionally separates their investments this way, or if you think it's unnecessary and everything should just stay in a brokerage account.
Curious to hear different perspectives.

I need some advice on whether I should use my last S/U.
Currently, my CAP is 4.57. I recently received a B+ for one of my modules. If I use my final S/U on this B+, my CAP will increase to 4.61.
However, this is my last S/U for the rest of my degree.
Next semester, I have two S/U-eligible modules:
- ME2162: Manufacturing Processes
- DAO2703: Operations and Technology Management
My dilemma is this:
If I use the S/U now, I get a guaranteed increase in my CAP from 4.57 to 4.61, which could be beneficial since I'll be applying for internships before next semester's grades are released.
If I save the S/U, I can use it next semester if I unexpectedly get a B or below in either ME2162 or DAO2703, which would likely provide a bigger benefit than using it on a B+ now.
I'm leaning both ways. On one hand, the CAP increase is guaranteed and could strengthen my internship applications. On the other hand, keeping the S/U gives me a safety net in case one of those two modules ends up being more difficult than expected.
If you were in my position, would you use the S/U now or save it?
