| 5 | EKSU Shines Again: Geology Students Qualify for Global SEG Challenge Bowl, Reinforcing University’s Rising International Profile

Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, has once again demonstrated its growing reputation as a centre of academic excellence and global competitiveness, following the outstanding performance of its students at the prestigious Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) Challenge Bowl Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Competition.
In a remarkable display of intellectual excellence, EKSU emerged as the First Runner-Up among universities from 48 Sub-Saharan African countries, securing a coveted place at the forthcoming SEG Global Challenge Bowl Competition.
The Vice Chancellor of Ekiti State University, Professor Joseph Babatola Ayodele, described the achievement as another significant milestone in the institution’s unwavering pursuit of excellence in teaching, research, innovation, and international recognition.
The regional competition, held on 15 July 2026, brought together some of the brightest geoscience students across Africa to compete in rigorous contests covering geophysics and related geological disciplines.
Representing EKSU with distinction were Olayioye Idowu Iyanuoluwa and Adeniyi Favour Olaoluwa, whose exceptional performance earned the University a second-place finish behind the University of Lagos. Both institutions will now represent the Sub-Saharan African region at the global championship.
Congratulating the students, Professor Ayodele commended their brilliance, discipline, and resilience, noting that their success reflects the University’s sustained investment in quality education and the development of globally competitive graduates.
“The achievement is not only a source of pride to Ekiti State University but also a testament to the quality of academic mentorship, research culture, and institutional commitment to excellence that define our University,” the Vice Chancellor stated.
He also paid glowing tribute to the Department of Geology under the leadership of Professor Aturamu Adeyinka, applauding the dedication of its academic staff, researchers, and students for consistently sustaining a tradition of scholarly excellence.
Professor Ayodele further acknowledged the invaluable support of the Tunji Olowolafe Foundation (TOF) for providing modern computer systems to the Department of Geology, describing the intervention as a strategic investment that has strengthened teaching, research, innovation, and students’ professional development.
The Vice Chancellor observed that the latest accomplishment builds on EKSU’s impressive performance in previous editions of the SEG Challenge Bowl, where the University equally distinguished itself internationally, expressing confidence that the experience accumulated over the years would further enhance the team’s competitiveness at the forthcoming global contest.
He reaffirmed the University’s commitment to providing an enabling environment for cutting-edge research, quality teaching, innovation, and talent development, assuring that EKSU will continue to support students in achieving excellence in both national and international academic competitions.
The latest achievement further consolidates Ekiti State University’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading institutions of higher learning, producing graduates capable of competing successfully on the global stage and contributing meaningfully to scientific advancement and sustainable development.

In the interview, Aranni reportedly stated that “we don’t need EFCC in Ekiti State.” The club’s management clarified that the comments were personal, unauthorized, and do not represent the official position of the establishment.
The management has since constituted a three-man committee to investigate the matter and recommend appropriate sanctions.

| 15 | Two Men Sentenced to 30 Days in Prison for Roaming Naked in Ekiti.
A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti has sentenced two men, Adebiyi Olusola and Oguntola John, to 30 days’ imprisonment for public nud*ty.
The prosecutor, ASP Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on July 13 at about 4:00 a.m. in the Palace area of Ado-Ekiti.
The defendants were arraigned on a one-count charge of conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace, contrary to Section 181(1)(d)(h) of the Ekiti State Laws, 2021.
They pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to them, while their counsel, Ogunleye Abiola, appeared on their behalf during the proceedings.
In his judgment, Chief Magistrate Abayomi Adosun held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, noting that the defendants' guilty plea further strengthened the case against them.
The magistrate subsequently sentenced both men to 30 days in prison without the option of a fine.
Earlier, the police prosecutor, Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the offence was committed at about 4 a.m. on July 13 in the Palace Area of Ado-Ekiti.
Oriyomi said the convicts were seen walking n&k*d around the palace vicinity and along a public highway within the Ado-Ekiti Magisterial District.
He argued that their conduct was capable of causing a breach of public peace, prompting their arrest and subsequent prosecution.
