03 "High said: "He is called All-father in our language, but in Old Asgard he had twelve names. One is All-father, the second Herran or Herian, the third Nikar or Hnikar, the fourth Nikuz or Hnikud, the fifth Fiolnir, the sixth Oski, the seventh Omi, the eighth Biflidi or Biflindi, the ninth Svidar, the tenth Svidrir, the eleventh Vidrir, the twelfth lalg or lalk."
Then Gangleri asked: "Where is this god, what power has he, and what great works has he performed?"
High said: "He lives throughout all ages and rules all his kingdom and governs all things great and small."
Then spoke Just-as-high: "He made heaven and earth and the skies and everything in them."
Then spoke Third: "But his greatest work is that he made man and gave him a soul that shall live and never perish though the body decay to dust or burn to ashes." "

04 It’s been an age
since we heard the song
Of our blood’s call
to be conquerors and kings
Our heads hung down
Upon hollow chests
Nor pride nor fire
Only loss’s sting
We gaze numbly out
O’er a world once ours
Now ashes bitter
And plague’s foul mark
For brothers turned
Against our own
As foes looked on
From the fearsome dark
And struck fell blows
Amongst our ranks
While we fought on
And killed ourselves
Our high jeweled towers
Came to the ground
Our kingdom of heav’n
Brought low into hell
And slow, forgot
Our shining crown
That was “honor” called
In days long gone
We cast it off;
We threw it down
Then nightfall came
And swallowed Dawn
And yet - we still
Can hear the call
In hidden places
Outside the walls
Where men ensure
The fire burns -
To what once we were
We shall return.

05 The Teuton´s Battle-Song — Howard Phillips Lovecraft
The mighty Woden laughs upon his throne,
And once more claims his children for his own.
The voice of Thor resounds again on high,
While arm’d Valkyries ride from out the sky:
The Gods of Asgard all their pow’rs released
To rouse the dullard from his dream of peace.
Awake! Ye hypocrites, and deign to scan
the actions of your “brotherhood of Man”.
Could your shrill pipings in the race impair
The warlike impulse put by nature there?
Where now the gentle maxims of the school,
The cant of preachers, and the Golden Rule?
What feeble word or doctrine now can sway?
Too long restrain’d, the bloody tempest breaks,
And Midgard ‘neath the tread of warriors shakes,
On to death, Beserker bold! And try
In acts of Godlike bravery to die!
Who cares to find the heaven of the priest,
When only warriors can with Woden feast?
The flesh of Schrimnir, and the cup of mead,
Are but for him who falls in martial deed:
You luckless boor, that passive meets his end,
May never in Valhalla’s court contend.
Slay, brothers, slay! And bathe in crimson gore;
Let Thor, triumphant, view the sport once more!
All other thoughts are fading in the mist,
But to attack, or if attack’d, resist.
List, great Alfadur, to the clash of steel;
How like a man does each brave swordsman feel!
The cries of pain, the roars of rampant rage,
In one vast symphony our ears engage.
Strike! Strike him down! Whoever bars the way;
Let each kill many ere he die today!
Ride o’er the weak; accomplish what ye can;
The Gods are kindest to the strongest man!
Why should we fear? What greater joy than this?
Asgard alone could give us sweeter bliss!
My strength is waning; dimly can I see
the helmeted Valkyries close to me.
Ten more I slay! How strange the thought of fear,
With Woden’s mounted messengers so near!
The darkness comes; I feel my spirit rise;
A kind Valkyrie bears me to the skies.
With conscience clear, I quit the earth below,
The boundless joys of Woden’s halls to know.
The grove of Glasir soon shall I behold,
And on Valhalla’s tablets be enroll’d:
There to remain, till Heimdall’s horn shall sound,
And Ragnarok enclose creation round;
And Bifrost break beneath bold Surtur’s horde,
And Gods and men fall dead beneath the sword;
When sun shall die, and sea devour the land,
And stars descend, and naught but Chaos stand.
Then shall Alfadur make his realm anew,
And Gods and men with purer life indue.
In that blest country shall Abundance reign,
Nor shall one vice or woe of earth remain.
Then, not before, shall men their battles cease,
And live at last in universal peace.
Thro’ cloudless heavens shall the eagle soar,
And happiness prevail for evermore.
— H. P. Lovecraft, 1916.

08 The Tregiffian Burial Chamber and Merry Maidens stone circle - Cornwall.
Took a little road trip for work today and had to take a short detour to check these out.
Real nice stone circle, up there with some of the best ones from Dartmoor. The chamber tomb has an interesting cup marked stone near it's entrance. Both of these sites are practically next to eachother and are right next to the road. Worth visiting if you're in the area. | 610 | 4 | Loading... |

10 Went camping at the weekend for my nephew's 16th and made him a drinking horn. I also carved him a spoon but I forgot to take a photo... nevermind.
I've got a batch of these so once I've cleaned them up they'll be going up for sale. Not woodwork, but not too different in terms of finishing | 472 | 1 | Loading... |

June is Men's mental health month.
To all those who 'bottle up',
To all those who feel the weight of the world upon their shoulders,
To all those who attempt to keep everything afloat around them,
To all those who try to support all those they love on their own,
To all those who sadly succumb & tread water to keep their head above water,
To all those who are always a shoulder for others to rely on.
Hat's off, know that others stand by your side & some times YOU need the shoulder to lean on.

19 Ahmad ibn Fadlan’s Risala contains a detailed description of a Rus vé, and worship within.
He describes a large wooden post with a face like that of a man, surrounded by smaller figures, which he later reveals were the God’s wife and children. Behind the idols were long stakes; likely the boundary of the sacred space, on which the heads of sacrificial animals were hung.
The Rus would bring offerings of bread, meat, onions, milk and alcohol, prostrate themselves before the large idol, and pray for success in trade. If they were unsuccessful, they would make offerings to the smaller idols around it, and finally, they’d make another offering in thanks when their prayers were answered. They would leave their offerings in front of each respective idol, and considered it auspicious when animals ate them.
