Position Summary
The Accountant will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, processing member savings and loan transactions, preparing financial statements and reports, and ensuring the Cooperative's day-to-day accounting operations comply with financial regulations and internal policies.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
• Record and post daily financial transactions, including member deposits, withdrawals, loan disbursements, and repayments.
• Prepare and maintain the general ledger, trial balance, and other core accounting records.
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports for management and the Board.
• Reconcile bank statements, cash accounts, and member ledger accounts on a regular basis.
• Monitor loan portfolios, interest calculations, and follow up on outstanding balances in coordination with the credit/loan department.
• Ensure proper documentation and filing of all financial transactions and supporting vouchers.
• Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and monitor budget performance.
• Ensure compliance with cooperative accounting standards, tax regulations, and internal control procedures.
• Support internal and external audit processes by providing required documentation and information.
• Perform other related duties assigned by the Finance Manager or General Manager.
Required Qualifications and Experience
• BA Degree in Accounting, Accounting and Finance, or a related field.
• A minimum of 5 years of direct, hands-on accounting experience, preferably in a savings and credit cooperative, microfinance institution, or bank.
• Solid knowledge of cooperative/financial accounting principles, loan accounting, and financial reporting.
• Proficiency in accounting software and MS Excel; experience with core banking or cooperative management systems is an advantage.
• Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and integrity in handling financial records.
• Good analytical, organizational, and report-writing skills.
• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines under minimal supervision.
• Fluency in Afaan Oromo required; knowledge of Amharic and/or English is an advantage.
