Nigerians pay N7.78 billion ransom as kidnappings surge 66%
Nigerians paid at least N7.78 billion in ransom to kidnappers between July 2025 and June 2026, as the number of people abducted across the country jumped by about 66% within one year, according to a new report by SBM Intelligence.
The report, titled The Capture of Nigeria’s Kidnap Economy, showed that 7,825 people were abducted during the period, compared with 4,722 victims in the previous reporting cycle.

Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves have risen above $53 billion for the first time in more than 17 years, reaching $53.11 billion as of August 24, 2026.
Checks by Nairametrics on the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) data show that the latest figure is the highest since January 12, 2009, when reserves stood at $53.25 billion.
The milestone extends a steady increase recorded since June, with the latest data showing continued accumulation despite movements in the foreign exchange market.

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday granted N500 million bail to Usie Otukpa Osang in an AUD$8,427,330.83 and US$3,639,462.00 alleged crypto fraud case instituted against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Justice Obiora Egwuatu granted the defendant bail, agreeing with the applicant’s legal team that he had placed sufficient documents before the court to warrant bail.
Recall that the EFCC, on June 29, 2026, arraigned him on an eight-count chargebordering on impersonation and obtaining by false pretence. The defendant denied the allegations and sought bail on liberal terms.

Meta Platforms has agreed to pay up to $16.7 billion to settle a landmark lawsuit brought by multiple US states over allegations that its social media platforms harmed teenagers.

Ventures Platform, an African seed stage venture capital firm, has announced the final close of its second institutional fund, Ventures Platform Pan African Fund II, at $84 million, exceeding its initial $75 million target.
The fund closed three years after the firm raised its first institutional fund and amid a more cautious global venture capital environment, according to a statement issued by the firm on Wednesday.
The latest close also expands the fund’s institutional investor base, with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Norfund, Norway’s development finance institution, Alphatron and Ashesi University Foundation joining as new investors.

Nigerian Naira shed slight value against the British Pound in the Nigerian market (both NFEM and parallel).
The development came as the pound Sterling enjoyed a much-needed comeback in the international foreign exchange market.

MTN Group plans to develop AI-enabled data centres with an initial capacity of about 150 megawatts (MW) across Nigeria and South Africa through a venture with an undisclosed UAE-backed investor.
