Today, the global mathematical community celebrates four extraordinary researchers. At the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia, the 2026 Fields Medals were awarded to Yu Deng, John Pardon, Jacob Tsimerman and Hong Wang. Yu Deng of the University of Chicago has worked with collaborators to connect the microscopic motion of colliding particles rigorously to the familiar equations governing fluids. This resolves the part of Hilbert’s sixth problem concerned with building fluid mechanics from Newton’s laws through Boltzmann’s kinetic theory. His achievements range from solving a decades-old problem about the distortion of knots to developing powerful ways of studying curves and spaces central to modern symplectic geometry. In 2026, he (Yu Deng) received the American Mathematical Society Eisenbud Prize in Mathematical Physics. In the same year, he received the Clay Research Award in recognition of his outstanding work on rigorously deriving the Boltzmann equation from the hard-sphere system over long time scales. Additionally, he was invited to give a 45-minute presentation at the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians.
